    2. I am greatly offended at that silly rhetoric about current politics. This country was only harmed BECAUSE OF the investigation. Thing is, why should we endure this tripe when we are all history buffs, and this board is particularly for persons with an intense interest in Andersonville. Get off the board, fool.

    3. Helen's report makes sense. The 20 or 40 mile either side of the Right of Way for RR land grants was for alternating sections. IIRC, the portion the government retained land was not eligible for homesteading. Helen's exception would have been entirely in keeping with the spirit of granting pensions, etc., to veterans. 1. Civil War "Land Grants"
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Bob was correct in saying that no 'bounty land' type land grants were given to veterans of the Civil War. However, perhaps the deed being discussed as a land grant was actually a special privilege-type homestead for Union Veterans. This land grant discussion sent me to my files as my great grandfather took advantage of this special privilege offered by law to Union Veterans. "Union veterans of the Civil War received special homestead rights -- in 1870, the right to claim 160 acres within railroad grant areas (other homesteaders could claim only 80 acres); and in 1872, the right to deduct their length of Civil War service from the 5-year residency needed to prove the homestead." (page 231, The Source, lst edition) My grt grandfather applied for a 120-acre homestead on railroad right of way land near Council, Idaho, in 1905 and he received his final patent in 1907 -- indicating they must have waived off 3 years of the normal 5-year requirement to homestead due to his CW service. Being able to homestead land on a rr right of way was definitely a benefit as when the rr came, land values usually went up. By being able to shorten the 5 year requirement by debiting their years of service, veterans could receive their final patent more quickly and 'turn over' the land for a tidy profit by selling it. That's what my grt grandfather did. As soon as he received his patent in 1907, he sold his land to developers who plotted a town which became a hub for shipping local fruit for a soon-to-boom apple orchard industry. Alas, if he had only held onto it, perhaps he would have been a rich man! -- Helen Graves

    3. MURDER OF THE CONSTITUTION The Constitution was murdered today in Washington, DC. She met her untimely death at the age of 212 years. The words and actions of William Jefferson Clinton, the United States Senate, the Democrat party and the media elite were the perpetrators of this dastardly deed. She was born on September 17, 1787 and died in February , 1999. William Jefferson Clinton fired the first shot by refusing to tell the truth in a civil trail. He, by this act denied a citizen her Constitutional rights. By these actions W.J. Clinton fired the first round into the Constitution's body. It was not the killing round nor the last round fired. W.J. Clinton fired more rounds into her breast by lying to the American people, and committing perjury before a Grand Jury. He struck more blows by lying to his staff and having them pass the lie on as truth. He tried to hide the wounds, by obstructing justice. One more bullet to the heart. The media and the Democrat party tried to hide the wounds, by saying this is a private matter. They refused to look at the injuries, obstruction of justice, perjury, and lying to the American people. With all the mayhem that occurred to the Constitution, she was still alive. She was sent to the House of Representatives, the triage doctors of Constitutional medicine. Once they received this badly abused document, they inspected her for mortal wounds. They found none that could not be repaired. They shocked the world with their courage; they impeached the leader of the group that committed the crimes to the Constitution. With more treatment needed to bring the Constitution back to her past glory they sent this document with referrals for Removal from Office of W.J. Clinton to the United States Senate. The final recovery was on its way, by cleaning the filth out of her wounds. The Senate received this resuscitated document in its hands. But instead of doctors of Constitutional medicine we found that they were quacks, each practicing his own version of charlatanism. One would say that W.J. Clinton was reprehensible and indefensible in his actions against the Constitution but he did not wound it. Others would say , yes W.J. Clinton did indeed injure the Constitution, but it does not rise to the level for us to remove the filth. Another group would say, it's okay for him to lie and obstruct justice because he is above the law, the public says so in the polls. While this bickering about the proper treatment continued, a case of spinelessness affected the Senate. The Senate on this day voted not to treat the wounds inflicted by W.J. Clinton and the Constitution died. There will be no funeral service because of the lack of mourners. She lies in state, shrouded in black, at the United States Archives to be viewed by all. Those that now view her body will remember the past glory she provided us, but know she will never be the same. For those that wish, you may attend the death of the Constitution bongo celebration at the White House. Instead of sending flowers, shed a tear. If you want your dreams to come true, don't oversleep!!!!

    2. Being Illinois first prison and closed for many years before reopening for use in the conflict, conditions were horrible. It was overcrowded and a stone cell structure unlike the camp at Andersonville. Good number of prisoners still at north Alton where there is a large memmorial or they were buried on smallpox island which was put underwater when original lock and dam put in. Alton was called the Andersonville of the North. Jim Keith Alton, Illinois

    3. From: Mark Schilling <schill@gol.com> To: ANDERSONVILLE-L@rootsweb.com Re; William Rea I am searching for information about my great-great-great grandfather William Rea, who belonged to the 45rh Regiment Ohio Infantry and was captured by confederate troops on November 18, 1863 in the siege of Knoxville. He was sent to Andersonville Prison on February 15, 1863 and remained there until November of the same year, when he was sent to Milan, Georgia. His health was severely affected by his stay in Andersonville, but he survived the war and returned to his home in De Graf, Ohio. He died in 1901 at the age of 58. I am just wondering if anyone out there has any ancestors who mentioned Rea in any letters or diaries. A long shot I know, but... Thanks for any help you can give me. 3. I do not recall seeing anyone answer this. There were no land grants given for CW service -- after all the Homestead Act was passed in 1862 providing for free land for the head of a family. The last veteran land grants were for the Mexican War. Lincoln received one for his short service in the Blackhawk War and used it to claim acreage in Iowa. I know the nothern yankees was very bitter about the Union soilders was treated at Andersonville. I search under " Alton Prison" I got two pages you should look into. One was about the confederated soldiers died in Alton Prison. Many lived for two months. Many are buried at a miltary cemetary at Louisiana. Any comment on this? James R. Searight 1059 W. I thought my mother was talking about the Searight's. Not so according to my family Searight historian, Mary Jo. So the man in West Virginia was George Washington Garton and the other man at Andeerson may be the twin brother, William Garton. George W. Garton did have four sons. He did have a twin, one of them was William Garton. I f my info and your are accurate and true.
