Hello to you, I have just begun on this list so I am listening until I understand how everything works. When speaking to a relative of mine I found out that my great grandfather was at Andersonville. His name was Dr. Seth Bowker. How do I go about finding out about him? Thanks, Abby
Jeff, I just yesterday returned from a trip to Andersonville. There is indeed a Monument with the spring flowing out of it. According to the account at the location, there had been a spring there all along. They think that when the stockade fence was put up the posts blocked the spring. On Aug. 14, 1864, there was a heavy rain storm and the spring again sprang forth. Some of the prisoners claim there was lightening just before it happened and many believed it was an answer to their prayers. Which it may have well been. I had two distant cousins there. One died on Aug. 16, 1864 just two days after the spring appeared. The other a few days later. The Andersonville website makes reference to an "Andersonville Revisited" weekend scheduled for 13-14 March, stating that they will have "living historians" portraying guards and prisoners. Does anyone have any further information on this -- or has anyone ever been to such an event at Andersonville in the past? Any information or impressions would be welcome. Thanks. T. A. Devlin, Jr.
I am sorry to see you go. You did a fine job and I am behind you! 100%, Take care and remember that you did help quite a few people, only a few abused you and the site. Thank you again from the people that you did help and we did appreciate you. Sue K Mt. Vernon, Washington Skin129427@aol.com
remove me from list A.S.A.P. I ve tried to get removed before but cant and I think the site is very informative, but I don't need to see 20 e-mails a day and spam.
Let me get this straight, The List owner posted that about the "Constitution?" I thought it was cute and sent it to all my friends and I lost some friends over it, guess they have no since of humor..anyway, that's no reason to quit the , I am one of the guilty one that send info to the list owner when he posted that about someone wanting info for a school project, I had a lot of email and didn't notice who posted it, as a matter of fact, it wouldn't have mattered anyway , because I didn't know who the list owner was...I just hit reply and sent it...for this I apologize.. I would just like to say that I greatly appreciate the Andersonville List and the opportunities it affords to learn about and appreciate part of our heritage. I appreciate all the work that goes into maintaining such a list, although I do not of myself understand all that is involved. Just a word of thanks to the one that has made it possible. Kind regards from Indiana, Nancy
Greg: I don't normally post things to the list, unless it's devoted to information about Andersonville; please don't be angry with all of us, just because of a few people out there want to be jerks. I understand what happened, when you accidentally posted the "STATEMENT". It happens to all of us at sometime or another..... There are those of us who do appreciate the work that you do, and I'm sure, I am as guilty as everyone else to not realize that it costs to be a Listowner. I'm fairly new to the internet and just now catching onto posting to the different lists. You know as well as some of the others, when you run something like this you are dealing with multiples personalities from all over the world. Some are very kind people and some are just jerks. You also must realize that knowone knew you were the same person who posted the "Statement" and the same person who owns the list, if I understand correctly. It was a mistake, and I feel like all is forgiven. If anything, please don't shut down the site, but just automatically "unsubscribe" the ones who's giving you a hard time. I myself am a little shocked at the immaturity of those who responded in such a harsh manner. I do agree with what you said about the Constitution, and feel like our country has had a great injustice done to it. We've all been violated because of his actions. Now that most of us have voiced our opinions, let's move on with our lives, and get back down to studying our Countries Great History...... Please don't leave us, or the List........ Sincerely, Melanie
An off-list response I just received to my earlier posting suggests that the on-line databases from Andersonville, <http://corinthian.net/mccc/plookup.htm> and <http://corinthian.net/mccc/coreglookup.htm>, do just about as well. So maybe you won't want to rush in as I did and spend money just to duplicate existing resources. Paul
Too bad. I don't know exactly how list ownership works. Subscribers seem to assume this forum will evaporate with the resignation of the list owner. Will someone who knows about these matters explain? Yesterday I received "The Prison Camp at ANDERSONVILLE," an interactive CD-ROM. Haven't had time to check it out yet. Anyone out there with experience with it? My great-grandfather James Madison BRYANT survived his stay as a prisoner at Andersonville -- October 1864-April 1865. If anyone has any information about his stay there, please contact me. I assume that other subscribers have helped people off-list, as I have on several occasions. From now on, all my postings will be to the whole list; so everyone will at least know that something is happening. I have NEVER interjected my political agenda into any genealogy list, or any other for that matter. I've always discouraged personal diatribes and anonymity. When I get in trouble, it's because I get too angry at people who DO pollute these lists with their personal ideological agendas. They are poisonous for any interest group which is not confined to people of one narrow view-point. If we can continue ANDERSONVILLE-L, let's do so. Paul C. Greg PLEASE don't absent yourself from this fine newsgroup. There are also many of us who look forward to each newsletter,.we are caring, articulate people as well , I certainly understand your frustration with the list, as it has become cluttered with posts that either have nothing to do with the subject matter, or with people trying to find their lost ancestors....maybe your letter will straighten them all out. You don't know how excting it was to see an Andersonville newsgroup come on line.......and it breaks my heart to see it go. I'm sure most of us here are truly hoping that you will reconsider your decision to leave us.........the list will fall apart if you go, and that will be a shame...In any case, I am grateful to you for sticking with the list for as long as you have....in spite of your total frustration. You have done a wonderful job, just stick with us a little longer. Alexahunt@aol.com

I only subscribed not to long back. I never did get a post in till now. Seems like this Mailing list has become a prison to the list owner. I can only give my thanks for the short time I've had on this list and regrets for the things that I've seen coming through just recent. My only response will be directly to Greg. First of all, thanks for the short opportunity I had on this list. Secondly, Yes like the others just entering the this list, my GG-grandfather was at Andersonville. He managed to survive 10 months in this God forsaken place. I can with this thought only say I also am sorry for the death of this list. I must also say thank to my GG-grandfather for not giving up on life and family while going through all the hardships that he really couldn't control. Greg, you are the list owner and in sole control of this hardship and decision. Whatever you do I will support you. Respectfully Craig Paxton Gardners, PA
Okay, folks: I surrender. Frankly, as your Listowner, I'm both fed up and disgusted by all you'all's arrogance, selfishness and bickering. So, I'm now closing down this 'out-of-control' ANDERSONVILLE-L mailing list...And I'm sorry to have to do so... I personally paid to create this ANDERSONVILLE mailing list last year (1998). Why? My GGG Uncle, 2nd Lt. Thomas B. Reeves, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry, was imprisoned there between DEC 1864 and MAR 1865 when Lt. REEVES was transported from Andersonville to Camp Fisk, MS and ultimately loaded aboard the Sultana where he met his death on 27 APR 1865. ---------------------- Yea, our beloved ANDERSONVILLE mailing list was recently abused by someone 'spouting' his own opinion. BTW, while I agree with that "abuser's" opinion, I've also eliminated him from ANDERSONVILLE-L. Our mailing list was *NEVER* created so that *anyone* could 'spout' those kind of off-topic posts... If that had been the sum-total of my recent trials------as your ANDERSONVILLE Listowner-----I could've easily dealt with it... But it wasn't. Instead, it was only "Strike #1." As a Rootsweb.com Listowner------owner now of only three mailing lists (SULTANA-L, REEVES-L, and ANDERSONVILLE-L)-----I'm getting absolutely *FED UP* with the degree to which new subscribers are managing to subscribe to the various Mailing Lists I've paid to create and yet aren't figuring out how to actually *POST* a message to that list! Folks, my own E-mail box now is clogged daily by E-mail messages from folks who obviously have ignored the automated instructions they each (you too!) received after first subscribing. Judging from the dozens of messages I receive weekly, I'm left to believe that many of you must think that I have nothing better to do w/ my time but to work for you personally answering all your questions. The worst is when I'm personally insulted for not helping them...I think that literally thousands of folks think that I-----and the ANDERSONVILLE mailing list I paid to create-----exist *SOLELY* to help them. I'm now routinely getting several messages every week that say (in essence): "My GG Uncle/grandfather/whatever was in such in such Regiment and was captured at some damned placed, AL/ GA" (or whatever your favorite villinous C.S.A. state was). But wait! It gets better....they then WANT ME TO SEND TO THEM WHATEVER I HAVE ON THEIR ANCESTOR." Obviously, many of them are newbie AOL users. Need I say more? But what's alarming is the number of subscribers from "regular ol' ISP's" now saying the kind of things... Then, (as if *THAT* wasn't bad enough), when the Listowner trys to simply forward up onto the List a bunch of posts from folks like described above, his mailbox *AGAIN* is beseiged by folks who apparently can't even see that ALL HE WAS TRYING TO DO IS FORWARD A FEW MESSAGES FROM OTHERS. Folks, I'm sorry. This mailing list is now so congested by idiots who not only can't properly address posts to the list, they insult and ridicule the very person who pays to maintain the List that that creator now wishes to disavoy himself from the List. NO MORE, folks! I surrender!!!!!! I'm not the absolute IDIOT that you all think I am. Screw it. I already know what I need to know about Andersonville and my ancestors there...You'all now can fight the last battle... I won't participate. Frankly, I'm tired of being insulted and harassed. It's now you'all's List. I'm unsubsubscribing myself. 'Bye. Greg Reeves Former ANDERSONVILLE-L Listowner greg@rapidnet.com
How would one go about obtaining a copy of Dorance Atwater's Prisoners List that was republished by the National Andersonville Society? Am still searching for confirmation of the death of Jacob Bennett, of Chaneysville PA. Was enlisted in 1864.

Folks! Hey, many of you are writing *ME* w/ all kinds of info, ideas, etc. concerning the messages I simply forwarded up onto our Andersonville List this morning. See, I'm the Listowner! These are simply messages that have been clogging my own mailbox for days because the people who originally typed them either aren't ANDERSONVILLE subscribers (and therefore can't post to the List) or are folks who simply cannot grasp the required uses of the List's two addresses... *PLEASE,* don't write me w/all this! I purposely included the original sender's E-Mail address is every message I forwarded onto the List.
