Do you have any KEMP'S from Indiana. My 5th ggfather had 16 grandson in the Civil war from Indiana. THANKS Mark Kemp
Kevin, My name is Ron Smith and I would dearly love to have some info and pics of my wife's g-g-g-uncle James Padon's grave site. I know for sure that he died while in captivity at Andersonville on Aug. 12, 1864. The only Padon listed there is a "C. Padon, 12th Illinois Infantry, Co. F, who died there on Aug. 13, 1864 of diarrhea and is buried in plot # 5541." I have been trying to straighten out this mystery for quite some time. I have attempted to email the NPS there with no results and our family is quite certain that the "C. Padon" listed there is actually J. Padon of our family. I've checked with the Illinois State Archives and they have sent me all of the records for the Padon family. There is NO C. Padon of the 12th Illinois Inf, Co. F, and never was on their muster rolls. I think what might have happened when he died is someone transcribed the "J" (for James) as a "C", especially if it were slanted or turned slightly. I have his Civil War records from the State of Illinois. James Padon was captured at Athens, Ala. on Jan. 26, 1864 and shipped to Andersonville prison in Feb or Mar of 1864. He was in the 9th Illinois Infantry, Co. I and was listed as a prisoner of war and missing in action at Athens, Alabama. I have copies of these records if you need them. He had three other brothers who also were in the war, Judson and William (my wife's g-g-g-grandfather) were also in the 9th Ill. Inf., Co. I and Henry Padon, the youngest brother was in the 9th Ill. Inf., Co. B. William became a Major and wrote a diary, which the family has, of his march to the sea with General Sherman. He mentions the capture of his brother, James at Athens, Ala. and tried to negotiate an exchange for him at the battle site but to no avail. Our family would like to get this cleared up and corrected, if that is possible. Your help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you, Ron Smith Spokane, Wa. Good morning. The definition of scorbutus is scurvy which is disease of malnutrition. It is caused by a lack of vitamin C. The symptoms are weakness, spongy gums and hemorrhages under the skin. Hope this helps. Dear Kevin, I would greatly appreciate photos of the graves of two of my ancestors, as well as photos of the site. According to the lookup results, grave number 6616, belongs to William Phelps. Grave number 9299 belongs to F.M. Phelps (they spelled his name Philps), who died of scorbutus. Does anyone know what this condition relates to? Is it malnutrition? The only one of my relatives to survive Andersonville Prison was Nicholas Johnson, who was released only to board the ill-fated riverboat, SULTANA. He also survived that, went on to marry several times, father many children and live until his seventies or eighties. What a powerful story! I am a novice researcher, and I stumbled on to this site quite by accident. I have truly been amazed by the helpful and knowledgeable people that contribute to the web site. Again, thank you for your efforts. Sharen (Phelps) Pestana Dracut, Massachusetts
Hi researchers, Things are kinda slow and I would like to repost my offer to those of you who are new to the list. I live about 40 miles from Andersonville and do look-ups on their on site database as well as a CD I have purchased. I will do these look-ups at no charge as well as get what info I can for all those who ask. I also will take photos of the site as well as graves of your ancesters. If they died there and their names are on file, ( 13000 buried there and only 460 unknown ), I can find their graves. Please let me know as Im going this weekend to take pics.. Hi, Kevin- I only recently discovered this list, and took a look through the archives. Our Micajah Lewis SHARP and Samuel J. SHARP enrolled at Patoka, IL in Co. F 111Regt. IL Vols.and mustered in at Camp Marshall. Both were captured and held in Andersonville Prison and were transferred to Co. C 48th IL Vols. M.L. (who enrolled under the name Lewis M. SHARP) died at Andersonville, and Samuel returned home. He died just a few years later. The Macon, GA Andersonville Prisoner online search site lists Private S. J. SHARP of Co. F 111th IL Vols.as exchanged on 1 April 1865. For some reason M.L. is not listed on their site under any configuration of his name, though I have records of the Army pension obtained for his orphaned son, Albert Morgan SHARP, which gives the details of his capture, confinement, and death. There are other sons of Micajah & Martha SHARP of Fayette County, IL that I suspect may have also served in the Civil War. By the time the senior Micajah died, in April 1866, his first four sons were already dead, those sons being John, Thomas, James, and M.L. I also have not been able to find anything more on son Francis M. SHARP who was 10 years old on the 1850 census. The Andersonville Prisoner search site lists a Private Francis M. SHARP who was sent to Millen on 11 Nov. 1864, and a Private Francis M. SHARPE of Co. D, Regt. 14 IL who was exchanged 1 April 1865. This may possibly be him, I can't be sure. I'd appreciate a look-up for Micajah Lewis SHARP. His records could also be listed as Lewis M., L.M., or M. L,.and SHARP may also have been spelled SHARPE. He may be listed either under Co. F 111th IL or Co. C 48th IL Inf. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me discover that Cyrus Tucker was not a prisoner at Andersonville. I'm disappointed, but I will try to figure out what did happen to him. I know he died prior to 1867. Thank you all for your help - I have found the nicest people while doing family research! Denise
Just as Denise said, all of you have been so helpful, and I want to send a BIG thankyou! When I signed up at the Andersonville site, I thought..."Oh, well, I'll just read the interesting historical tid bits that come through" I never thought that this list would be so much help to me in my ancestry search. :-) And, BTW, the historical tid bits have been great, too! Sincerely, Judy

Sharon, I was in Gettysburg today and the book store has spiral bound re-prints of Atwater for $13.50. There would be shipping on top of that. Call 717-334-1124 and ask for the book store in the Visitor's Center. BTW, at National Battlefield parks (I assume Andersonville fits into his category) the bookstores are run by a non-profit organization which puts the profits back into historic reservation, so, while you can probably get the title cheaper at Amazon or Barnes and Noble, try to use the book stores in the parks. You might call the park at Andersonville and see if they have the book. From: Mark Schilling <schil@gol.com> > To: ANDERSONVILLE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: New Andersonville Book > Date: Tuesday, March 16, 1999 I'd like to thank Edward Boots for responding so quickly and thoroughly to my query about the fate of the prisoners who left Andersonville in the fall of 1864. I assume my ancestor was among the sick prisoners chosen for parole in December -- he spent months in a Maryland hospital recovering from his experience at Andersonville before finally returning home in Ohio. I've briefly checked out the Florence Stockade website and it looks quite impressive. I've already found a diary written by a soldier who was in my ancestor's regiment. Interesting stuff! Thanks again! Mark Schilling
Hi Denise, I found your g-grandfather, Cyrus Tucker listed on the muster rolls in the Illinois State Archives. Go to: http://www.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/civilwar?92 All you have to do is scroll down to his name. He is listed as being in Co. C with the 92nd Infantry. It also says he was from Mt. Carroll, Illinois. You might search around this site and any other links they have for land grants and pensions. You can also apply for his military service records at the National Archives in Wash.D.C. Their web address is: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html Again, just scroll down the page until you see their email address for requesting Form NATF 80. Instructions are all on the page. My g-grandfather, Benjamin Web Noe, also belonged to the 92nd Infantry from Illinois. We received his service records through the National Archives, including his pension records and those of his widow, my step-grandmother. He was captured at Nick-a-Jack Trace and sent to Andersonville. He later was sent to Florence where he was paroled from. I really appreciated the information posted by Edward Boots. It was very interesting. Thank you. Ilene Noe Kreider krinkjfk@netins.net
