I am a High School Teacher in Idaho. We recreate the Wirz Trial. Am interested in additional sources of historically accurate testimonies from the trial. Thanks. Ernie

Denise, I've been doing lots of research in the Illinois State Archives (past 2 years). If you email me the info I might be able to help. I'll need his name, regiment, and company. Also explain what you have as far as records and why the age difference. Hi Edward, You were really helpful before on Jerry, and now you've come through on John, Thank you so much. Where did you get this information? I had gone to a Ohio web site that lists all the units, and looked at the 6th, but they didn't have a roster. I had gone to the Andersonville site, and put his name in just in case he might of joined too, and it came up with his name, but no age of course, and with your information It is almost proof positive he is our John, as his age matches what we just found in the 1850 census for Orange Township, in Ohio. He was 17 then. It looks like the three older brothers in the family all joined, William being the only one to return. How tragic, but I don't imagine this was the only family that had this happen to. Again, thank you so much this is really wonderful. I just today received my record requests from the NARA, so will get these two filled out and sent in. Best to you, and I hope I can be of some help to you or someone else. I need to read more on the Civil War, and the prisons, and then perhaps I can pay back for all the nice help I've received. Myrna Singer Casey
Does anyone have any experience with the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Roll? I just got a copy for Cyrus Tucker and it has his age as 21. If this is my Cyrus Tucker, and everything else seems right, he would have been 26. Thanks, Denise
Hey Ron! That posting helped several people, me included. Have to look into the Speer book. I've read Futch and Hesseltine and a dozen or more of the diaries repeatedly in years past. The Speer book may provide a fresh take. Sounds good. Paul

Larry, I'm glad you found your relative listed at Andersonville. Libby prison was used primarily for officers and Belle Isle prison was used for holding all enlisted or non-commissioned officers (NCO's-Sgt's,etc.). You might want to go to Barnes & Noble and purchase a book called "Portals to Hell - Military Prisons of the Civil War" by Larry R. Speer. It is published by Stackpole Books, 5067 Ritter Rd., Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17055. It is very informative regarding prisons in both the North and South and tells how and why prisoners were moved from one prison to another. There was a third prison in Richmond besides Libby and Belle Isle. It was said to have been much worse than the other two. It was known as Castle Thunder and was used to house political prisoners, confederate deserters, women, blacks, and later, federal prisoners. Anyway, I hope this helps you. Ron Smith Spokane, Wa. Hi everyone, A few weeks ago you helped me greatly, and I found that my Jeremiah Singer from Ohio, who had been reported imprisoned at Andersonville had not spent time there, but was at Cawaba. Well, now I may have a brother of his who did die at Andersonville. I looked at the web-site that was recommended in one of the last requests, I think from Ron Smith in Spokane, and found a "John Singer". Well now the interesting part. Only yesterday I received E-mail about my Jerimiah's family, parents, brother's etc. from the Ohio 1850 census. In that census it showed more brothers and sisters than we knew of, and one was a "John Singer of Company G, 6th Reg. Infantry. There is a grave # but what I'd like to know, is there a way I can find out more about this John besides sending to the NARA for info? Ron, you have really been giving allot of people some great help. You need to be complimented. >From Myrna, over the hump in Tacoma
Thanks for the info on Belle Isle vs. Libby Prison. What about non-commissioned officers? Family tradition said that my ancestor Eugene Dealton Tichenor (some war records show Dalton Fichner), a Wisconsin sergeant, captured at North Anna River in Virginia, died at Libby Prison. I have actually found him at Andersonville, where indeed he died. Where did non-coms go? Cherlynn Thomas, You were asking for more information on your g-g-grandfather, Rudolph Blatter. He is listed by the National Park Service at Andersonville, Georgia as being a prisoner there. They also have more information on him if you write to them. Go to the Andersonville Prisoner Lookup site at: http://www.corinthian.net/mccc/plookup.htm When you get to the page just type in his last name and you'll see the info they have on him. Keep in mind the info is not accurate in most cases but they do have more into on him. The address to write the NPS is at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps you. Hi Cherlynn, Just wanted to tell you that enlisted prisoners were sent to Belle Isle prison in Richmond, Va. and the officers were sent to Libby prison. Belle Isle was an island in the middle of the James River. From Belle Isle they were transferred to Andersonville, Ga. My wife's g-g-g-uncle was in the 9th Illinois Infantry, Co. I so I thought I might look up you g-g-grandfather. If you go to: http://www.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/civilwar?M++7+CAV you will see a: "BLATTER, RANDOLPH M 7 CAV RED BUD" listed. Notice the first name as different from what you have, "Rudolph" -- don't no why the discrepancy here. If you would like the civil war records from the state of Illinois, contact them at: ILLINOIS STATE ARCHIVES Norton Building Springfield, IL 62756 I requested all of the records on three of my wife's family from them and they sent me a HUGE packet with all of their records and only charged me $3.00 total! I'm assuming your g-g-grandfather lived through Andersonville and was paroled at either Savannah, Georgia or Charleston, S.C. If he were paroled at Charleston, S.C. there is an excellent web site that you should see; "The Friends of Florence Stockade" Go to: http://members.aol.com/qmsgtboots/florence.html If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know. Does anyone have the iformation on James A. BATCHELDOR from Wisconsin, he got wounded at Chicamagua, GA. and captured, died in Andersonville and is buried there. I need the # of his Grave, or anything else pertaing to this person. This person was my Grandfather's Brother. Thank you. glenrose@flash.net
On October 11, 1863, the 7th Illinois Cavalry was guarding Colliersville, TN, which was an important rail junction about 25 miles east of Memphis when they were attacked by Chalmer?s Confederate Cavalry. A lieutenant was killed and about 15 men were captured. One of the captured was Pvt. Rudolph Blatter, my gg grandfather, from company M. Pvt. Blatter was transported to Libby Prison, which was a converted warehouse in Richmond, VA. Libby prison was set up by the Confederacy as a temporary holding center for enlisted prisoners until a more widespread system of prisoner exchanges could be instituted. Recognizing a need for permanent holding facilities away from the war zone where liberation might be possible, the Confederacy constructed the Andersonville prison during the winter of 1864. The first prisoners transferred to Andersonville came from Libby prison, and the official war records show that Pvt. Blatter arrived on March 14, 1864. Cherlynn Thomas

Does anyone else have an ancestor who was in Co K, 7th Illinois Cavalry and was a prisoner at Andersonville? Maybe someone knows what battles they were involved in and where they were captured. I'm interested in David Ball who survived, later married and moved to Decatur Co., Iowa. Mary Hart
My GG Grandfather spoke of belonging to an association called the "Survivors Of Andersonville". Does anyone have any information on this association/group? Thank You Hal Hileman hhileman@ix.netcom.com
Thanks to all who came to my rescue. I think I got it correct this time. Jim
If anyone on the list has special interest in the 96th Illinois Infantry, it's battles and it's experiences at Andersonville, I would like to hear from you. I have information on these experiences, written by my GG Grandfather, that would be of special interest to you. Hal Hileman hhileman@ix.netcom.com
While surfing the web, I came across this search page. This should be helpful to anyone researching their POW ancestor, or if they think they might have been a POW. The URL is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl ( type in CW-POW into the data base ) Regards to all, Judy
