I am an Anderson by my father's mother's side, but my last name is not Anderson. I would still have the genetic code passed on by her to my father to me. And somebody with the last name of Anderson could be adopted or brought in by marriage, so they wouldn't have the genetic code. Someone would have to show a blood relationship through their particular line.
So how do you go about choosing a donor if the name is not important. This is so new to most of us ,but seems like it could be very interesting. Funny Michelle,but good question?I am not really up on this but will try to explain my conception of it. First you have to have a donor who has documented proof that he is a a descendant of the person that you are trying to prove. In this case we need some proof that John Anderson is our connection. So if you get donors from each branch of John Andersons family lines,they should all have pretty much the same DNA.That would prove the connection to John. I may be wrong about the donor having to have the Anderson name,they just have to be a proven descendant. So if we get a descendant from John Anderson, Jacob Anderson,Daniel Anderson and Campbell Anderson all of their DNA should match,proving they all came from the same line. Is there anyone out there that can explain it better? If so please chime into this discussion.
