Tennessee Newspaper Extracts and Abstracts The Knoxville Press by Pollyanna Creekmore Page 125 3 May 1837 ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY PATRIOT GONE. Died Monday the 17th at the residence of his son, William Anderson, on Monday the 17th the Hon. Joseph H. Anderson, late Comptroller of the Treasury of the United States. Joseph Anderson was born at White Marsh, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, on the 5th of November 1757. In the year 1776 he joined the army of the revolution and served during the war from 1776 to the close in 1783. After serving two years as ensign and lieutenant, he received the command of a company in the New Jersey line, and so continued to the close of the war, when he received, by an act of Congress the brevet rank of Major. He was in several of the battles fought by the army under General Washington in the Northern States........After the close of the revolution, he settled in New Jersey and there engaged in the practice of the law, to which he had devoted his studies before the commencement of the war. Soon attaining a high standing in hi! s profession, he was appointed by Gen. Washington, in 1791, a Judge in the Southwestern Territory, now the State of Tennessee in which capacity he acted for several years. He bore a prominent part in the convention which formed the constitution of Tennessee in 1796. After serving on the bench for several years he resigned to engage in the more active and lucrative business of the practice of the law. To this object he assiduously, energetically and successfully devoted himself, until he was called by his adopted State in 1797, to act as one of her first Senators in Congress. He was appointed by four successive elections to represent that State in the Senate of the United States, in which capacity he served for eighteen years, when in 1815 he was appointed Comptroller of the Treasury of the United States, by Mr. Madison, the duties of which office he discharged with honor to himself and service to his country, until about twelve months since, being prostrated by paralysis! , he withdrew from the cares of public life. He expired with calmness and Christian resignation after an illness of eight days........He was for many years a sincere and devoted member of the Presbyterian church, punctual in his attendance on the worship of the sanctuary, carefully observant of the Sabbath, and fervent in his prayers at the throne of divine grace. Worldly honors may solace or dazzle for a time but it is in the suitable preparation for eternity which outweigh all worldly fame........(From the Sun)

I found the info below on a Surgenor site. Notice the names here compared to those of Pulaski Co., KY. Montgomery Co., VA - part that became Grayson Co., VA. 1790 Oct 21 = WILLIAM SURGENOR taxed on 1 horse, no white males 16-21, no slaves. Neighbors on Fox Creek, Little Fox Creek, Knob Fork and Beaverdam Fork of Elk Creek on 21 Oct 1790: Jacob Anderson, James Anderson, John Anderson, Peter Anderson, Vardiman Anderson, Frederick Bransteter, David Carnute, John Day, Joseph Day, John Low, Elijah Pope, Pilgrim Pope*, William Roberts, Doswell Rogers, Sr., Thomas Rogers, WILLIAM SURGENOR, Thomas Testament, Jonathan Tinker, James Williams (FC), John Williams (FC), John Williams, Jr., Elijah Wooton. Pulaski Co., KY Anderson notes: Jacob Anderson appears on the 1805 tax list for Pulaski Co., KY. Also, showing up on the Pulaski Co., KY tax list for the first time are: James Anderson, Isaac Anderson, and John Anderson. John Anderson appears to be the oldest with a male age 16 to 21 listed in the household with him. John is taxed for 200 acres of land in Pulaski Co., KY and the watercourse is listed as Flatlock (Flat Rock, or Flat Lick?). Isaac Anderson is listed as having 100 acres of land on Brush Creek. James Anderson and Jacob Anderson appear to be young men listed as over the age of 21. Jacob Anderson owns two horses (as listed on the 1805 tax record for Pulaski Co., KY). Jacob and James do not own land in 1805, therefore a location of where they were living is not listed on the tax record. In 1806 Jacob Anderson is again listed on the tax records for Pulaski Co., KY. Also listed on the 1806 tax list are: Vardiman Anderson, Isaac Anderson, James Anderson, and Joseph Anderson. The tax list doesn't show Jacob Anderson owning land. He is listed as over age 21 and owning two horses. Vardiman Anderson in the record above was the first Anderson in Pulaski Co., KY and from records remained there all his life. Mary Lou Hudson Desc of Jacob Anderson (b. 1779) and Barthena Bull

Margaret, Keith is the connection to Ericus Anderson's line. Darlene In a message dated 5/4/2004 5:43:41 PM Central Daylight Time, margiesan@charter.net writes: Darlene, Thomas Shirley Anderson m. Judith Robinson, his brother Garland married her sister Sarah Robinson. They were daughters of Edward Robinson Jr, and Annah Meador. Descendants of both these brothers married into the Young/Mayberry families of Jackson co, Tn. Young is my husbands maternal line and Mayberry/Mabrey is his paternal line. Jackson co is full of the Meadows surname as well as Anderson. I have collected info on this line back to Lawrence and Mary Plunket. (Courtesy of Patrick Anderson's website) My Long line came out of Ashe/Alleghany co, NC (borders Grayson co, Va) My John Long Sr, (my 4th great grandfather) married Susannah Vannoy. Susannah descended from the Vannoy/Anderson connection. My third Anderson connection is Carter H. Anderson of Hawkins/Hancock co, Tn, who I think is connected to either Rev war Peter Anderson or the Swimpfield line of Hawkins co, Tn. I am still trying to locate a male Anderson of that line. Carter and two of his son's were killed in the CW. Two more died young, either before marriage or before they had sons. I will keep trying. Margaret, I wish I could give you more insight but we just don't know where the connection is at this time. All we know at this time is that Jene, John, Jerry and Keith are related because they participated in and were a match to each other in the Anderson DNA Study. We are Group #6 on Herb's website at http://www.geocities.com/herb194/AndersonDNA.html. How is your husband related to the Cumberland County VA Anderson's? How are you related to the Anderson/Opdyke connection? The Cumberland County VA Anderson's seem to be related to the Meades/Meador/Meadows family. Meadows is related to my father's side of the family as his great grandmother was a Meadows. Any help on these families would be appreciated. Is anyone else on the list related to any of these people? I just recently found the Anderson/Meador connection and would like to communicate with others researching these families. Margaret, To my knowledge noone knows who John's siblings were, or his parents. Your Peter sounds like a very good bet though. Has any male descendent in your family been tested for DNA? You could tell if they were related that way and it would give both of our families a real clue maybe. Margaret Mabrey <margiesan@charter.net> wrote: Della, Thanks for clarifying those Anderson's for me! One thing that came out was the fact that your John was born in Bedford co, Va in 1758. I have a Peter Anderson that was born in Bedford co, Va about 1756. Could they be brothers? Supposedly this Peter was in Grayson Co, Va, Lee co Va, and maybe Hawkins co, Tn. (He applied and received a Rev War pension in Hawkins co, Tn.) I have seen charts on the web, connecting this Peter to the Swimpfield Anderson line, out of Grayson co, to Hawkins co, Tn. I have seen no proof so I have not done any research in Bedford co, Va. at all, so let me know if you have anything on this Rev War John. Siblings especially.
