    3. I was just about to answer Darlene's post concerning 'George Swimpfield' Anderson. I don't know what source the 'George' came from. I have never seen anything in print to say that his first name was 'George'. I know that 30 years age Elaine May of Albuquerque listed him as George Swimpfield, and other picked it up. Sheila Anderson Lewis, a descendant has him as 'George Swimpfield'. It might be a good idea to determine how they arrived at that, before trying to piece the George's together. My Carter H Anderson b 1820 Scott co, Va named his oldest son George. His 'cousin' Andrew J. also named his first son George. Sean Anderson thinks that George of Hawkins co m. Rhoda? So far it's a theory. His Daniel being one of a group of siblings, that so far we can't pinpoint parents, except that they were still alive in 1852. Jonathan of Hawkins co was b ca 1770/80 died Mar 1849, had a son named Elin, 'as his only son' by deed, had daughters Catherine Herd, Rhoda Sizemore, and Mary Smith. Grandsons named Eli and Carter Anderson. I have ruler out this Carter as being my Ancestor Carter H.Anderson. I am waiting on DNA results on Connie Reinholds dad, to see who he connects to. It seem that I haven't given you answers, just more questions. As my son said today. ' two heads are better than one', and I agree witrh that. Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul B. 1. George Swimpfield Anderson
    2. Hi, John Anderson, a member of this list, were talking last night and he came up with something that I hadn't thought about so thought I would pass this on to those of you who might be interested. There has been some speculation that the George Anderson in Grayson County VA might be Swimpfield of Hawkins County TN as researchers have said his name is George Swimpfield Anderson. There is also speculation that Moses Anderson of Wayne County KY and Swimpfield Anderson of Hawkins County TN might be brothers. "Old" John Anderson of Grayson County VA left a will which was probated in 1830 in Grayson County VA. In his will he specifically named a George Anderson as his son. He did not name a Moses Anderson. In "old" John's will he states his children are: George Anderson William Anderson Jonathan Anderson Isaac Anderson Nancy Anderson Milly Anderson Elizabeth Anderson Joseph Anderson George Anderson was born about 1775. George Anderson is exempt from paying taxes in 1810 Grayson County VA. There is a George Anderson on the 1830 and 1840 Hawkins County TN census. There is a George Anderson on the 1850 and 1870 Hancock County TN census. If the George in "old" John's will is actually George Swimpfield Anderson then "old" John left Moses out of his will. George Anderson of Grayson County VA leaves at some point, whereabouts unknown for sure. Is he the George in 1830, 1840, 1850, 1870 censuses above? Or is he George Swimpfield Anderson? If he is George Swimpfield is he a brother to Moses Anderson of Wayne County KY? Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Darlene

    3. Margaret and Mel, Swimpfield is correct; however, the particular Swimpfield that Mel is citing is from Wayne Co. Ky, son of Moses Anderson. In Wayne county records the name is recorded as Swimpfield, S. Winfield and Swinfield. I believe Swimpfield is probably correct because of the Swimpfield (and Moses) names from Hawkins county TN. I believe (but can't yet prove) that Swimpfield (Hawkins TN) is the brother of Moses (Wayne KY). Swimpfield (TN) had a son named Moses. Moses (KY) had a son named Swimpfield. Moses (KY) oldest child, Nancy, was also born in Hawkins Co. TN. Roger

    2. Mary Lou Hudson
    3. Appleton Motor, Appleton, Wisconsin - May 21, 1863 Kansas Correspondence. Mission Creek, Kansas May 13th 1863 Friend Ross: -- Some ten days ago I was stopping at Topeka, the State capital, and began a short letter to you. Since then I have been on a "Jayhawking" expedition, an account of which may be somewhat interesting. On Sunday evening, May 3d, the news came into Topeka that fifty of seventy-five "Bushwhackers" had passed through Wilmington, on the Santa Fe road, about twenty five miles from there. They were divided into companies of ten or twelve men each, well armed, and mounted, on the best horses, under the lead of Dick Yeager and Bill Anderson, men noted for their crimes. They boasted of belonging to "Quantrelle's Band," and that their object was to murder, rob, and pillage. We saw the necessity of immediate action. No soldiers were there that could be ordered out, so U.S. Marshal McDowell immediately called out a company of volunteers. We were well mounted, and armed with revolvers and guns. At 11 1/2 o'clock we started. The night was very dark and rainy, but our overcoats kept us dry. Our guides knew the road, and the hope of catching the outlaws kept us in good spirits. About 6 o'clock we struck their route at Burlingame, and stopped for breakfast. After this we had n! o trouble in following them, and before sunset we reached Council Grove, the last village on the Santa Fe road, having rode about 75 miles in nineteen consecutive hours. One of them had been caught there and on his way to Fort Riley next day under guard he tried to escape, and was shot. In the morning we started again, and soon found some positive indications of their presence. We found a Mr. Howell, at Diamond Spring, killed, and robbed of a splendid horse and sixty dollars in cash, and his wife shot in the wrist. At Cottonwood Creek, having rode that day, fifty miles, from Council Grove on the Santa Fe road in less than eight hours, we surprised one part of ten of them with their wagons, just starting for their dinner camp. We took them all prisoners without firing a shot. There were two wagons loaded with arms, ammunition, provisions, and whiskey. Our company was then reduced by hard riding to about forty men, and we so tired that we could do no more that day. We camped for the night, or rather stopped at the Ranch, and made the best preparation in our power to resist an attack if made in the night. We were safe, however, for in the dark, Bill Anderson and two others rode upon our pickets, looking for their wagons, and finding we were a little too strong for them, as the rebels say, "retired." In the morning, thirteen of them took breakfast but a few miles from us (Note, next sentence unable to read)....the Grove, and the rest continued in pursuit; but finally lost track of the marauders, on the plains. One other of the same party was taken the same day by another company. This made twelve who were taken. We left them at Council Grove to be taken to Fort Riley, and got back to Topeka, Friday night. After we came back the outlaws shot, in cold blood, a young soldier by the name of Sabine, from Wisconsin, robbed! the Santa Fe mail of $4000.00 near Black Jack, and sacked the place. They are now, probably within sixty miles of here, and companies are after them, and perhaps may get them, at least, I hope so. One thing I know: if they are taken, not much mercy will be shown them. Gov. Carney says he shall use every means in his power to rid the State of such inroads. Crops here are looking finely, wheat in particular, I never saw look better. Your former townsman D.M. Johnston has a piece which stands from 2 1/2 to 3 feet high. We have had some fine rains lately, which have done great good. A large number of farmers are trying to raise cotton this year, and with a fair prospect of success. Dr. S.E. Beach, formerly of your city, has accepted the appointment of Ass't Surgeon of the 8th Kansas Reg't, and starts tomorrow for Nashville, Tenn., to join his regiment. Yours &c., J.W.

John Mahlon Anderson, Jr., and I have been researching our Anderson lines for many years but could not find proof that John's line, Thomas Anderson and Sally, were related to my husband's (Jene) line, William Anderson and Catherine Walling/Wallen. Some of the people that are on the Anderson-KY-NC-TN-VA mail list decided to start an Anderson DNA Study with FamilyTreeDNA. Herb Anderson agreed to be the project coordinator. Even after this group was started I was still leary of the DNA process not really knowing anything much about it at all. Last fall Jene and John participated in the DNA Study and were a 25/25 match with each other. This means that there is a 50% probability that the Most Recent Common Ancestor was no longer than 7 generations and a 90% probability that the Most Recent Common Ancestor was no longer than 16 generations; and a 95% probability that the MRCA is within 30.4 generations. So we determine that the Most Recent Common Ancestor is between 7 and 30.4 generations. Thomas Anderson was born about 1785. William Anderson was born about 1768 according to census records. This was exciting news! The DNA results had proven what the paper trail hadn't ... and that is that Jene and John are related. Jerry Anderson is also a 25/25 match with Jene and John. Jerry is descended from Daniel Anderson born about 1815. Daniel Anderson has a connection to Hawkins County TN relation but so far we have not found the connection to Jene and John. Now for some more exciting news. Brian Keith Anderson participated in the DNA Study. He is a 23/25 match with Jene, John and Jerry. His line descends from: Joran of Sweden Anders Joransson Ericus Joransson/Andersson Peter Andersson Ericus Anderson Peter Anderson John W. Anderson Nathaniel H. Anderson Edgar Anderson Abb Anderson Robert K. Anderson Brian Keith Anderson If he had been a 25/25 he would be in the same category with Jene, John and Jerry but since he's a 23/25 match then the Most Recent Common Ancestor % would be off somewhat. He has 12 generations of Anderson's whereas Jene and John have 6 generations documented. We don't know who the MRCA is but it is a 95% that the ancestor is within 30.4 generations and as close as 7 generations. This is my understanding of the DNA percentages for the MRCA and may not be exactly correct. Jerry's line is Daniel Anderson, b. ca 1815 in TN and d. ca 1889 in KY. Jene's line is: William Anderson, b. ca 1768 Stephen Anderson Mauccoy Anderson Orville Anderson Joseph Anderson Wathen Anderson Jene Anderson John's line is: Thomas Anderson, b. ca 1785 Harvey Anderson Mahlon Anderson Grover Anderson John Anderson Sr. John Anderson Jr. If you're interested in the Most Recent Common Ancestor percentages go to http://www.familytreedna.com/faq2.html If you're interested in participating in the Anderson DNA Study group please check out the web site at http://www.geocities.com/herb194/AndersonDNA.html and also http://www.familytreedna.com/ for more information. 2. The Anderson DNA Study group #6 has had some surprising results in the DNA matches and I thought I would share with you our findings.
