Following are Anderson notes from Freestone Co TX and Rankin/Hinds Cos MS for anyone researching the name in those areas. Also some thoughts on possible links suggested by submissions to Gen Forums and Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project. As far as I can tell I'm not connected to these folks. Andy Anderson ==================================== 1860 CENSUS, FREESTONE COUNTY, TEXAS 4 GEORGE ANDERSON 20 SC, printer (painter?), living at inn 6 ASA ANDERSON 21 MS, cabinet workman, ZACK ANDERSON 19 MS, cabinet apprentice, in household of William COTTON 42 NC and wife Mary COTTON 37 LA. 26/27 RUBEN ANDERSON 38 TN physician, Jane M. 38 TN, Mary E. 10 MS, Wm. Susan, married Jessie WEAVER James I., b ca 1833 Fannie Asa Green Anderson, b 1832-1839 MS Jesse Columbus, b 1838 MS Emma E. William Note there is no mention of the names Zack or Martha in this list, which suggests it may be incomplete. James Anderson is said to have died 1849 Hinds Co MS and Elizabeth in Freestone Co in the mid 1850's. ================================================ 1850 CENSUS, RANKIN COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI (All born MS unless otherwise indicated. Rankin Co borders Hinds Co.) 309 OLIVER ANDERSON 43 LA, Phoebe 30, Sarah 14, George 7, Francis 5 male, Mahala 3 458 A. James married Elizabeth Noland. Most of their children went to Freestone Co TX. Evidently Jemima's son Henderson, not shown in her household in the Rankin Co 1850 census, was living in 1900 in Leon Co TX, where William I. Anderson is found in 1880. ====================================== 1850 CENSUS, HINDS CO MS, shows several Anderson households, including these: 31 ROBERT ANDERSON 51 SC, Massie 48 female, Lorenzo 29 female SA (GA?,LA?), Uritissa COOK 27 SA (GA?,LA?), Archibald 38, James M. 19, Fredrick 16, Thomas J. 9, Amanda J. 8, Mary M. 6 32 ---- Anderson, 25 TX, male, teacher 821 JEFFERSON ANDERSON 41 GA, Mahala 25, William 14, Nancy 12, Sarah 10, Henry 8, John 5 A query to the West Family Genealogy Forum http://genforum.genealogy.com/west/messages/4979.html states Robert Anderson married Massey West in 1819 in St. Helena Parish, LA. A WorldConnect Project submission says West was the maiden name of Jemima Anderson of Rankin County. Jefferson Anderson's family was listed next to Jemima's in the 1860 Rankin Co census. A WorldConnect submission re James Anderson gives an Ohio origin for him. Whatever documentation exists for this should be examined. Oliver Anderson is shown as born in Louisiana around 1807. Note that the census readings suggest that both Oliver and Robert went from Louisiana to Mississippi. If Jefferson and Jemima were connected to Robert, and if James and Oliver were connected to them, then, rather than coming from Ohio, the family would appear to have made their way to TX via SC>GA>(AL?)>LA>MS. ================================ Whether William I. Anderson of Leon Co and neighboring Freestone Co is William, son of James and Elizabeth, I can't say. The William M. Anderson, age 16, in the Malone household and Martha in the Weaver household in Freestone Co in 1860 would presumably have been children of James and Elizabeth. Names, initials, ages and birthplaces were often recorded incorrectly on the census, but William I. would only have been around 11 in 1860, if his year of birth in the 1900 census and on his tombstone is correct. According to WorldConnect submissions, it would appear there was a Malone and Noland family connection prior to their coming to TX and that would account for the orphaned William being in Isaac Malone's household in 1860. 1880 CENSUS, LEON CO, TX LDS transcription, Dist. 3, Page 176B W. Nolon 25 TX LA LA, who may have been Henry, brother of Wood Noland, with whom Asa and Zachariah J. Anderson were living in Freestone Co in 1870. Asa married Fannie Noland. ================================= An obituary of Mrs. William I. Anderson (1851-1926) appears in an archived message sent in 2000 to the TXFREEST-L mailing list. It names eight children: Jim, Will, Neil, Arch, Jess, [Winston], Piety (deceased) and Mrs. D. R. Claridge. ================================= 1900 CENSUS, FREESTONE CO, TX (First name of the head of this household is overwritten and illegible. Middle initial looks like E. It's undoubtedly William I. Anderson, judging from the names in the obit above.) ----- (E.?) ANDERSON, b Apr 1849 MS MS MS farmer Mary, wife, Dec 1851 AL AL AL (Married 29 yrs; 8 children, 8 living) Archie, son, Jan 1881 TX MS AL Jessie, son, Dec 1884 TX MS AL Winston, son, Dec 1886 TX MS AL Piety, dtr, Aug 1889 TX MS AL Ramie, dtr, Dec 1892 TX MS AL ======================== Some later census records for William I.'s children give either LA or MS as birthplace of their father. The death record of one of these children might show the county and state where William was born. ************************************** ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 Subject: Re: ANDERSONs in Calvert, Robertson Co.
