    3. Cumming and Anderson sound like Scottish names. Scots and Irish seaman used to have to sign themselves as British, while English seaman could sign themselves as English. As a former Merchant Seaman I used to witness many rows and near riots on this, especially as we had to have shore passes for the US and I found the US immigration cops more sympathetic to the Celts demands not to be classed as "British" (particularly in one incident in Galveston, Texas). Many Scots and Irish immigrants had to sail through English ports. Some Scots through Irish ports and some Irish through Scottish ports, which may add to confusion. Like today England liked to maintain a monopoly on passage form their seas and airports, forcing Scots to travel that way, as some will experience when trying to fly to Scotland and having to land at London airports.
