Judy, Is that "Washington" a middle or given name? Consider that they might have been Native, possibly Cherokee, as they often adopted ultra-patriotic names to avoisd the stigma of Native names. Just a thought. Also, My gr-gr-grandmother, Akelio Anderson, was a Waxhaw Native who married a Thomas Anderson. She lived in Paw's Creek in Mecklenburg Cty, NC, south of Charlotte.
