JAILHOUSE JOCK Mar 23 2004 Elvis linked to village By Ken Banks ELVIS Presley's roots have been traced to a tiny Scottish village. A new book claims that the King of Rock 'n' Roll's ancestors hailed from tiny Lonmay in Aberdeenshire. Now the village, with a population of 300, is set to become a big draw for thousands of Elvis fans around the world. Scottish author Allan Morrison found that Andrew Presley married Elspeth Leg in Lonmay on August 27, 1713. And their son, also Andrew Presley, emigrated to North Carolina in 1745. >From this landing of the first Presley in America, Elvis's ancestry can be directly traced to 1933, when Vernon Elvis Presley married Gladys Love Smith. Two years later, Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. Allan, 61, of Greenock, Renfrewshire, said: 'I started looking into Elvis's past in 1998, when I heard rumours of him coming from Scotland. 'I was able to trace his family tree and when it got back to Lonmay it was like striking gold. 'I am an Elvis fan myself so it has been a joy to trace back their past and establish that the Presleys were of Scottish origin.' Allan is now looking for a publisher for his novel The Presley Prophecy, which follows the life of Andrew Presley. Elvis fan clubs were delighted with the news of Scotland's link to The King yesterday. Paul Downie,43,of the Elvis Touch Fan Club said: 'For years, fans have thought there was a connection with Presley and Scotland and I have always thought his roots came from the Aberdeenshire area. 'I would think fans will want to visit Scotland and Lonmay I imagine there will be an upsurge.' Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board's chief executive Ian Dunlop added: 'If Elvis is indeed from Aberdeenshire, this could be great for the area.'
