    3. Many Scots slaves intermarried with black slaves. So it is possible. Though I don't know the particular history here. Marion Anderson seems to have been quite a gal. (Marion Braudfute was the name of William Wllace's wife killed by the English Sheriff of Lanark. Marion is till quite a popular name in Scotland, as is Anderson, MacAndrew, MacAindreas and Gillanders. Black "lining out" singing and chanting to the heavens in Church, like Hill Billy whining, is very similar to that of those leaving for the Americas during the Highland Clearances. English peasants, servants and workers did not receive public education till the 1870's. The Irish slaves would not have been literate as Catholics were forbidden education under British rule. Presbyterians suffered the same oppressions in Ireland from the Anglicans and many managed to educate their children at Scottish Universities. Many black Americans took their surnames names from their slave owners, mainly English and Dutch. The Scots slaves were literate, due to the Reformation and were often used as clerks and overseers because of this. After slavery was abolished many of the Scots descendents were able to buy the failing plantations in the West Indies. In British Guyana many black people are still grouped in Scottish clans.
