Hello, I am looking for the family of Orpha Anderson who was born in Virginia in about 1776, and married Jeremiah Milner in January 1800, Halifax County, Virginia. They later moved to Franklin/Hart County, Georgia, where, beginning about 1850, they became known as "MILLER." I am trying to find information on the ancestors of Orpha and of Jeremiah. I saw one place on the web that gives Orpha's father as Meads or Meads Anderson, and I think this makes sense since there was a Medes Milner (1840 Census) near them after they moved to GA (who, could well be their son, and named for Orpha's father). Can anyone help me find Orpha's parents? I have not been able to find any document that shows her father to be Meads (or anyone else). I would appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction! Thank you very much! LouDean
Thanks to everyone who helped me find Peter Johnson ANDERSON's death record. It turns out that while he was born in Scotland and had lived most of his life in Northumberland, England, when he became old and according to the death certificate has "senile decay" he ended up in the Royal Alfred Institution in Belvedere, Kent, for ailing seamen. Thanks again for those who found him in census records and other sources and helped me piece the information together. Ed Scriven
I, too, am searching for ANDERSON born in KY. No idea what county. Abraham is found in Gallatin Co., IL and 1850 census states he was born in KY. He married in Gallatin Co. and started raising family--William, Phillip, Mary, John; moved to St. Clair Co. where more children were born. Then he moved family to Taney Co., MO. Then wife, Martha, moved back to IL--Franklin and Perry counties. I am looking for the county in which he was born in KY and where he died, which I suspect was in MO, because sometime after 1894, the mother gave the youngest daughter her permission to marry stating "father being dead". I would like to know who Abraham's parents and siblings were and from where they came.
Hi Paul, At this point, I have no ANDERSON family members found in Greene Co., but, as you know, that can change in an instant. After coming home from a trip to Harrison, Nicholas and Bourbon Cos., KY, I now have a new generation of ANDERSON family to research. Found all siblings of my ggggrandfather , all born in the beginning years of KY. I will keep your query and keep the names handy, so if I run across anything, I will contact you. Thanks for writing, as you know how tough Anderson is to research. Hi David... I may have talked to you before via email..not sure. My brick wall is my greatgrandfather Martin Anderson, born about 1824 in NC? That is according to the 1850 Greene County Indiana census. Martin died soon after the census, so he has no long trail to follow. His son Jesse is my grandfather. They lived in Greene Co. all their lives. Any help would be appreciated. Ed, I have the birth and christening dates of 5 of Peter and Eleanor Anderson children. Did you know there were twins? Jane and Joanna born 13 March 1849. Joanna must have survived but Jane did not as she is not on the 1851 census. Janis
Ed, I couldn't find Peter in the 1891 census either. Actually I only found him in the 1851 census. I was trying to find if he went by the name Peter, John or Peter John. Eleanor went by Ellen most of the time. He was Peter Anderson in the 1851 census. He was really lucky to have lived as long as he did being a mariner. Their life expectancy was not that good. He hadn't made a census since 1851 maybe he was at sea again for the 1891 too - getting a little old for that but who knows. There is another death reference that might bear looking into. You had said the family notes suffered through the years with bad copying and such. I find that the number 9 and the number 4 are frequently read wrong. There is a death registered for a Peter Anderson age 74 for 1895 March q South Shields 10a 448. If he died towards the end of 1894 it is a possibility that the death was not registered in 1894 or missed the cut off for that quarter or if there was an inquiry the registration could be postponed. I am not sure but there may have been a mariners old folks home sort of thing in South Shields. The other thing is that he may have been living with one of his daughters and the enumerator applied the incorrect last name. This happens more than you would hope. If you would like to see the 1851 census email me and I will make arrangements. Janis
It is intimidating to say the least to search for someone with a common surname, but I still have to hope someone else out there in cyberland is connected to this gentleman. He is not a direct relative, so I have nothing more than what I list here. I only seek information on his death to help complete our family records. Peter John ANDERSON was born 13 Jan 1817 in Unst, Shetland, Scotland. He married Eleanor WANN in Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England, on 9 Jan 1843. She is my wife's 2g grand aunt. Eleanor was born 8 Mar 1825 in Rock Moor, Northumberland. She died 17 Jul 1885 in Chirton, Northumberland. We would like to locate the date and place of death for Peter. When my wife's ancestors came to America in the 1860's they brought information with them about their family and kept in touch with those still in England for awhile. The problem is that almost all of the dates we had handed down to us were corrupted over the years either by bad copying or bad memories. I have had to research parish records and government records to get the accuracy back into our files. We have been told he died 19 Nov 1899. Since even the information on his wife was initially wrong and had to be researched and corrected I have little confidence this is correct. IF THERE IS ANYONE WITH A CONNECTION TO THIS MAN WHO CAN HELP US OUT, PLEASE LET US KNOW. I would even be really happy if he could be found on the 1891 Census to give us a better idea of where he might have been when he died. The British Birth/Marriage/Death index has a very likely prospect with a Peter ANDERSON, 82, in the 4th quarter of 1899 index. That all fits nicely, but the location is a question. The registering district is Dartford, and we have no indication he or his family would be there. Thanks for your time and help. Ed Scriven

If no one else wants it, I will make a small donation (say $10.) to your library and pay the shipping on the book. But if you find someone in that family line, by all means, let them have it. The line of Anderson's that I am working on came from Scotland and settled on Maryland Colony then through a couple of counties in VA then winding up in Cumberland Co. VA for several generations then to Ellis Co. Texas. Thank you for your time and effects in saving books. No, but interesting coincidence. Since Rufus Delp went to Oregon and is buried there, and John Arthur Anderson's brothers went to Washington state to work and live in around the turn of the century. We have lost touch with his brother's families. All the boys were born in North Carolina. Sheila ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glenn A. Close... but no banana ... Most of my relatives dating back to 1793 come from Burke, Buncombe, McDowell or Cherokee Counties in N.C ... they migrated in the mid- 1800's to Fannin Co. Ga., when it became a county sometime after the Cherokee removal. The Anderson Family Cemetery in Fannin County dates back to 1863 to my great, great, great grandfather, Samuel Anderson and his wife Millie (Ballew)... Many Scots slaves intermarried with black slaves. So it is possible. Though I don't know the particular history here. Marion Anderson seems to have been quite a gal. (Marion Braudfute was the name of William Wllace's wife killed by the English Sheriff of Lanark. Marion is till quite a popular name in Scotland, as is Anderson, MacAndrew, MacAindreas and Gillanders. Black "lining out" singing and chanting to the heavens in Church, like Hill Billy whining, is very similar to that of those leaving for the Americas during the Highland Clearances. English peasants, servants and workers did not receive public education till the 1870's. The Irish slaves would not have been literate as Catholics were forbidden education under British rule. Presbyterians suffered the same oppressions in Ireland from the Anglicans and many managed to educate their children at Scottish Universities. Many black Americans took their surnames names from their slave owners, mainly English and Dutch. The Scots slaves were literate, due to the Reformation and were often used as clerks and overseers because of this. After slavery was abolished many of the Scots descendents were able to buy the failing plantations in the West Indies. In British Guyana many black people are still grouped in Scottish clans.
