Hi all, I am scraping at the bottom of the barrel of childhood memories. Does anyone out there know of a relationship between the Andersons of PA and MD and the original owners of the Piggy Wiggly grocers. My grandfather, Howard John Anderson, b1894- d1974 in Phila. was a butcher and grocer by trade. I thought my dad made up the name Piggly Wiggly until I saw one during recent travels. As a child I was told that an uncle or cousin of Howard was one of the founders. So far much of what my Dad told me has not panned out. At this point I don't even know if my Andersons were Irish, Scots or Swedes. TIA and good hunting to all. Christine Anderson Robinson threadancr@aol.com Reston, Virginia
Hi Karen, I just couldn't let this go by without commenting. Your Zula would fit very nicely in my Anderson family in Rains Co,TX, but of course I'm sure that there's no relationship. How about Alonzo, Cicero, Diora, Viola, Monroe, Joe (Joel), and Izora. Even the time frame is right. Cicero b. 1875 was my grandfather. Mary Alice
Wadene, Your reply to Michael Burdge caught my eye. I too have a William Anderson b. 1765 & d. 18 Feb 1812, no locales. Mar'd Nancy Forshee b. 1766 & d. 1807 no locales. They had: Thomas Rachael 1805 lancaster, Pa m. Nicholas Bennett as 2nd wife. Hiram b. 1788 Maryland m. Mary Mulford Josiah Rebeca Is this William any of yours? Jack Stewart(futbofam@aol.com)
Does anyone out there have info on Zula? It's such an unusual name, a person's not likely to forget it! lol She would have been born around 1882 in Llano, Llano Co., TX. She was a resident of Arlie, Childress Co., TX at the time of my grandfather's birth (Frank Campbell Smith, b 31 Oct 1902). She was married to William Edward Smith. After this birth, they migrated to Pinon, NM to raise their family. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Karen Dunn Little Rock, AR

Hi - this is my 1st time posting for wanted info re: my husband's grandmother: Lena M./Linuth/ Anna Anderson. She was born April 1, 1860 in Norway. She, I believe, met my husband's grandfather Albert M. /Hulbert Simpson in Stoughton, Wisc approx 1880. They were married in Crookston, Mn May 28, 1882. Lena died Feb 3, 1887 and Albert died Aug 9, 1929 in Crookston, Mn. Both are buried at Hafslo Lutheran Cem in Harold, Mn. We have authenticated proof of deaths of Lena, Albert, Severt , Ed and Anna. The last three names are of their children. There is also a Gertrude Anderson that married Samuel Simpson and are parents to Andrew Simpson and Louie Simpson plus two other brothers and one sister residing in Viroque, Wisc in 1909. Andrew and Louie lived in Crookston, Mn. Can't prove any relationship - BUT - If anyone out there knows of any of these people and can give me any further info, it would be great. Thanking you in advance - really have been trying for years to get further info, but no luck. Rosemary Simpson

forwarding to the list for a non-subscriber In a message dated 99-07-05 21:58:54 EDT, you write: << Subj: {not a subscriber} [ANDERSON-L] J.J. Anderson (Burchett/Burgis?), 1850-1927, VA Date: 99-07-05 21:58:54 EDT From: nlafon@dgif.state.va.us (Nelson Lafon) To: ANDERSON-L@rootsweb.com Here's a mystery that has puzzled my family for years. I am going to my ANDERSON reunion this weekend, but perhaps it should have been called our BURGIS or BURCHETT reunion! James J. "J.J." Anderson was born 4/7/1850 in Franklin County, Virginia. His 6/19/1873 marriage license with Martha Ellen Shepherd (d/o Addison and Margaret C. Collins Shepherd) in Montgomery County, VA states that his parents were James T. and Caroline B. Anderson of Franklin County. This would have been a normal cue for more research up the ANDERSON line, but grandchildren of J.J. remember hearing that he was a BURGIS or BURCHETT and that he had been adopted by Andersons! I am finding that this is next to impossible to prove, but can readily see from Franklin County records that he was not really the son of James T. and Caroline B. Anderson. James T. Anderson, s/o Jesse and Polly Anderson of Tennessee, was married to Caroline B. Gilliam, d/o Arch and Nancy Gilliam of Franklin County, on 10/20/1853 - three years after J.J.Anderson's birth. J.J's birth in 1850 is established by his tombstone, several census records, and his marriage record. An infant was not shown with Caroline B. Gilliam and her mother in the 1850 census, as surely J.J. would have been shown if he was born to her out of wedlock. Short of a guardian record for J.J., which I have not found at Franklin County Court House, these facts lead me to believe that he was adopted, maybe informally, by James T. and Caroline B. Anderson shortly after their marriage. I found an infant named James Burchett in the poor house in the 1850 Franklin County census. He was 8 months old in December when the census was taken, meaning he should have been born in April, as the tombstone for my J.J. Anderson shows. This fits everything I currently know about J.J., except that (1) there is still no proof this is the right one, and (2) several family members contend his name was BURGIS (BURGESS), not BURCHETT. I could not find adoption records at Franklin County by either spelling, but perhaps I wasn't looking in the right place. In case anyone else if interested, with James Burchett in the Franklin County poor house in 1850 were the following BURCHETT'S (among other surnames): Frances, 35 (his mother); Martha, 16 (his mother or sister?); Sarah (14); Susan, 4; and Eliza, 8 months (his twin sister?). Chilren of this mystery James J. (Burgis/Burchett) Anderson were recorded in his family bible, which I have seen. Perhaps this will help others or clue someone in on this line. Children: (1) William Albert Anderson, 3/27/1874, Peppers Ferry,VA -3/30/1943; m. Annabelle Robinson/Robertson (my direct line). (2) Mary L. Anderson, b. 5/31/1876, Prices Fork, VA (3) Nannie C. Anderson, b. 9/5/1878, Pepper's Ferry, m. a Hughett (4) Margaret A. Anderson, b. 8/15/1880, Green Valley, VA (5) Ellie J. Anderson, b. 3/16/1883, " " " (6) James C. Anderson, b. 3/16/1883 (twin of above), " " " (7) Lucy Lee Anderson, b. 10/18/1887' " " " (8) Charles B. Anderson, b. 10/9/1891, Pembroke, VA. Note: Pepper's Ferry and Price's Fork are in Montgomry Co., Green Valley and Pembroke are in Giles County, VA. If anyone has any clues or suggestions about the heritage of J.J. Anderson, please let me know. My family and I would love some news for this Saturday's reunion! Nelson Lafon, Staunton, VA >>
To Michael Burdge, I don't have any information on a Thomas born at that time. My John Anderson born abt 1655 in Scotland had a son Thomas born 3 May 1697. I don't have any information on his descendents . I only have the information of my William #l, #II and #III. William #III moved his family to Pennsylvania in about 1785. Our Thomas was born in Bedford Co. PA in 1789. If I find any thing about your Thomas, I will submit to Anderson list. Wadene Bennett

Roll call and searching for ancestors and origin of: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------------------ John1 Anderson, of Scottish or Scotch-Irish ancestry, came to America and settled in Watertown, Mass. [Scotch-Irish defined as their Scotch ancestors spent one or more generations in Ireland before immigrating to America.] John1 Anderson married on 16 July 1706, [Watertown VR] for his first wife, Rebecca Waite (or Waight), b 1680, d ?, daughter of John & Mary (Woodward) Waite . It would appear that the Waight's and the Woodward's were both early settlers of Watertown, Ma. John1 Anderson lived in Watertown and Newton, Ma. until after 1715, when he moved to Groton, Ma. He married 30 July 1716 [Watertown VR] for his second wife, Mary Applin, b 11 Oct 1677, d ? , daughter of schoolmaster John and Bethshuah (Bartlett) Applin. Again, Mary Applin's ancestors seem to have come from the Watertown, Ma. area, with Bethshuah Bartlett's father having been Ensign Thomas Bartlett, an original proprietor of Watertown, Ma. who died 26 Feb. 1654.
