Subject: Y2K - DATE SETTINGS PLEASE READ BEFORE DELETING; THIS ISN'T A JOKE; AND, IT MIGHT JUST APPLY TO YOUR SYSTEM'S WINDOWS!!! A colleague has just pointed out some Y2K information that I was not aware of. As a result, I found a setting on my computer that needed to be changed, and could have caused me quite a bit of headache on January 1st, had I not known what I was looking for. You may want to check your systems, and pass this information on to your friends as well. This is simple to do, and but VERY important. THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO VALIDATE THE CORRECT DATE SETTING: ----------------------------------------- Click on "START". Click on "SETTINGS". Double click on "Control Panel". Double click on "Regional Settings" icon (look for the little world globe), not the date and time icon. Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page. (tab on the top extreme right). Where it says, "Short Date Sample", check and see if it shows a "two digit" year format ("YY"). Unless you've previously changed it (and you probably haven't) -- it will be set with just the two Y's, it needs to have four YYYY's. That's because Microsoft made the 2 digit setting the default setting for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT. This date format (two Y's) is the date that Windows feeds *ALL* application software and will not rollover into the year 2000. It will roll over to the year 00. Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select the option that shows, "mm/dd/yyyy" or "m/d/yyyy". (Be sure your selection has four y's showing, not just "mm/dd/yy). If your version of Windows does not show the four y's option, just type in the additional two "y's". Then click on "Apply". Then click on "OK" at the button. That was easy enough to fix. However, every "as distributed" installation of Windows worldwide is defaulted to the two y's format and will fail Y2K rollover. Pass this along to your PC buddies no matter how much of a guru they think they are, this just might be a welcome bit of information! Best of luck in your research in 2000. Ross G.H. But, for those of you who haven't been a subscriber during the holidays, let me give you a hint at what is about to happen. Starting tonight, Santa, among others, will start delivering new computers, internet service, and genealogy gifts (software) to a host of new rooters! We will be having an influx of NEW subscribers to all the lists. (NJMONMOU-L has gained one new list member per day for the last 2.5 months!) This is GOOD! But while you will see new cousins, friends, and contacts coming on-line, joining email lists, posting surnames to databases, they will be asking all those questions you have seen posted over and over again. Unfortunate as it may be, new users mean we have to reinvent the wheel all over again!*Grin* Please welcome the "newbies" to our lists, have PATIENCE with them, help them and hopefully send them in the right direction. For a month or so (perhaps til the end of January) it will be helpful if we can refrain from using a lot of initials and abbreviations in our responses. When discussing the FHC, let's all take a couple of seconds to type "Family History Center," and give an explanation of who, what, where, when. Please don't assume that EVERYONE knows what it is, or has one near them. I can't stress enough how important your patience and help is for the next month or two. Mistakes will be made, (like posting a message that is blank, or no subject line, or leaving entire digests in replies or my personal favorite, "Researching John Johnson. Send all information"!*LOL*) Questions will be asked like "What is the FHC, what is the SSDI, what is, can you explain, where do I find, etc...Remember that these were once OUR errors and OUR questions. We were all new once, and many current subscribers are still learning, so let's continue the spirit of cooperation throughout the year. This list is about helping each other. Let's be specific and clear in our responses to folks, and give a little extra in explanations. Also keep in mind that new subscribers may know nothing about computers, the internet, and genealogy, resulting in many extremely inexperienced researchers. If you see questions on the list regarding computers, software, etc. please respond to these questions off list if at all possible. REMEMBER these new researchers may have file cabinets full of information regarding YOUR own family tree, so let's be as cordial, helpful and informative as we can be! YOU ALL ARE THE BEST! Happy Holidays! 3. ANDERSON-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > [Extract follows] Re: "Hiram to Nancy McCallister 31 Oct 1811." Can anyone please provide additional info about this Hiram? I have been looking for over 30 years for data re parents, birth, location, etc., concerning a HIRAM KING ANDERSON, my gr-gr-grandfather. A Bible in our family states only that he was born in 1787 and gives his second known marriage (to a Susan Harrup, in 1828 in Madison Co, TN). Family oral tradition says he was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, but we have no corroborating info on that. Other info states that Spartanburg Co was formed--along with five other counties--out of "District 96." The first firm data we have is his first marriage in Davidson Co, TN, in 1818 to a Susan Newsom, by whom he had two daughters. There follows info in the Third U.S. Census for Tennessee, of 1820, listing for Davidson Co, TN--"Outside Nashville". There Hiram is grouped first with two other Andersons: William E. and Solomon. We surmise, from their age listings, that William E. may be their father. We know that Solomon married Elizabeth Newsom, sister to Hiram's first wife, Susan. We next know that Susan died before 1828, when Hiram remarried (to Susan Harrup). Family-wise, we have learned from other people that Hiram also had another brother James, whose descendants lived in southern Davidson Co and in Williamson Co, TN, and that there was a younger sister Hannah. Could this Hiram who married Nancy McCallister, cited above, have been the same as my ancestor? Data on Hiram has been so very elusive prior to his second marriage. I would be so very glad to exchange later data on Hiram and his descendants. I apologize for such a rambling msg and I thank all for their consideration. Happy holidays! For each of you, may the best of 2000 be better than the best of 1999!!! B. A. Parham
