By the please don't let the fact that I dabble in collecting Andersons of colonial Virginia discourage any of you from using the list in a much broader context. It is fully intended to serve the worldwide community. I keep 100MBytes of web space at rootsweb and I would encourage any of you who are willing to put in the work to add records and trees from other Countries and States into a web site of your own design. I would willingly cooperate in allowing you to co-locate the web site at rootsweb. It is my intention to leave my colonial VA collection to the genealogical community in support of free genealogy when I pass on. Patrick J. I have been looking over the published literature on Louisa county, Virginia colonial Virginia Andersons and it has become obvious to me that insufficient work has been done in the original county records by prior resarchers. There were more Andersons there than have been published to date. Two early families of Virginia , one headed by WIlliam Anderson and the other by Robert Anderson had children that ended up in Louisa County. To some degree the reason for no-one having assigned these children is probably due to confusion over the proper parentage. WIlliam to WIlliam to Pouncey is one line into Louisa Co. Robert to Robert to John is another line into Louisa Co. In looking through the Virginia Patents card index file I found the individuals below. Each of the patents is accompanied by a description of the location of each landowner. If any members of the mail list can associate their ancestor with any of the men in this list I would be very interested in receiving what notes they may have and I will attempt to build a profile of the Louisa Co Andersons. I will use that profile on my next visit to the Virginia archives to see if I can gather additional proofs to link these families. Thanks for anything you can contibute. ___________________________________ Louis Co Virginia Land Patents Souce: Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants http://198.17.62.51/collections/LO.html David 08/16/1756 Louisa Co 400a both sides of Lickinghole Creek 33/119 David,Jr. 11/30/1838 Louisa Co 76.5a west side of NE Creek Grants 90/226 John 04/10/1751 Louisa Co 385a bothside of Harris's Fork of Cub Creek adj George Dabney, Lancelot Armstrong etc patents 29/404 John 03/03/1760 Louisa Co 923a Machomp Creek bothsides Newfound Cork of Camp Creek patents 33/672 Nathan 03/07/1800 Louisa Co 28.25a bothsides Horsepen Branch grants 45/253 Robert 05/12/1749 Louisa Co 350a branches of Bunches & Great Creeks adj Francis Whittle etc patents 34/255 Robert 07/05/1774 Louisa Co 700a bothsides Gibsons & LIttle Creeks adj Stanley & Farncis Smithins Patents 42/549 William 07/14/1769 Louisa Co 360a bothsides south fork of Contrary Creek adj Thomas Grisham patents 38/698 Patrick J. The treaty might have ceded the lands, but Cherokees remained in the mountains there, hiding and moving around and married Whites. Swinfield Anderson, Jr and his wife Betty Delp had 12 children. One Sarah Caroline (my g-g-grandmother) mothered 5 children by her Native common law "husband" and lived among the Cherokee in the Sparta, NC area of Alleghany County, NC. Sheila
The WIlliam Anderson who was in the Powell valley was there before the revolution [Source: The Gulf States Historical Magazine, Vol I, Sept 1902, page 141.] He was living in the valley in a cabin when Joseph Martin and his associate John Redd from Henry County VIrginia arrived in the valley to survey some land for themselves. They all came under indian attack and had to hole up in the cabin for the winter. Joseph Martin traveled back east and was instrumental in getting the Virginia House of Burgesse to vote to send and expedition under General William Christian. This campaign was officially directed from the Virginia Congress and is therefore accepted as military service in the American Revolution. The call had been directed in response to reports of British attempts to stir the Indians into active warfare against the western settlements of the Colonies. This campaign against the overhill Cherokees lasted a year and involved an extended overland trek by the army as far west as what is now Knoxville, Tennessee. After the burning of the Indian Villages, the elderly chiefs of the Cherokee sued for peace and the Treaty of 1777 was signed at Long Island, Tennessee. This ceded all the northeastern lands of the Cherokee Indians to the United States. Joseph Martin was established as Indian commissioner for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and moved to Long Island, TN. Patrick J. Regarding the search for Native American heritage---I have been searching for confirmation of Cherokee---just heard some info today that I should be looking at the women instead of the men?? Can anyone advise? GGrandmother and GGGranmother of Thomas Eugene ANDERSON...Molly Ida HIGHTOWER and Phoeby BOLES said to be Cherokee. Having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to research this. Kathleen Anderson

Hi all: I have been monitoring this list for quite awhile and have not seen my husband's ancestors mentioned. I am looking for Henry Anderson b. NC (don't know county) in 1795. He moved to Stewart Co GA and married Elizabeth Williams. He held several county and city offices and had 2 boys and 5 girls. Thomas, George Washington b. 1840, Ella, Sabrina, Susan and Isabella. His wife died in 1847 and he died in 1880 in Stewart County. His son George Washington moved to TX (Henderson Co) and died there. Would appreciate any leads on Henry's parents as we have been unable to locate them and have been looking for many years. Thanks. Judy Bennett Lubbock TX
I have several James Andrews - do you have any additional identifying information on him? Kay
