The Orkney Isles are a long way from the woods and lakes of Saskatchewan, but for a group of native Americans of the Cree people a forthcoming journey to Scotland is also a journey home. The Scottish Arts Council has given £10,000 towards a fund that will see a group of Cree Indians from Canada visit Scotland and re-discover their links with the people of Orkney - a genetic link forged more than 200 years ago. The 25 members of the Cree tribe will travel to the northern isles in September to explore their "roots" and celebrate them in a series of musical and artistic events. It has been estimated that by the end of the 18th century more than two-thirds of the Hudson Bay Trading Company workforce in Canada were men from Orkney. The Orcadians married local women and Scottish blood entered the family trees of the Cree people across Canada. In 1876, when Cree chiefs signed away 121,000 square miles of Canada to Britain, in exchange for reserve lands, many had names that are more common in Scotland - Spence, Tait, Macdonald, and Calder. Kim Foden, the secretary of the Saskatchewan First Nations "Coming Home" Orkney Committee, became interested in the links between Orkney and the native peoples of Saskatchewan when she investigated the history of her own family. An ancestor, Magnus Twatt, had left Orkney to work in Canada more than 100 years ago. Mrs Foden discovered that he had married a local Cree woman and she has travelled to the Sturgeon Lake area to meet her new, if distant, relatives. She was made an honourary member of the tribe, then introduced to Mr Twatt's great- grandson, Harold Kingfisher, her distant cousin. The Hudson's Bay Company administered a vast territory in Canada between 1670 and 1870, but the Scottish workers were banned from getting married, Mrs Foden said. The children of these marriages were given the traditional family names of their fathers and were often fluent in Gaelic, Scots-English, and Cree. Mrs Foden said that on her visits to the Cree reservations she had noticed people with lighter hair and skin - the genetic remnants of Scots. She said that the Cree and Orcadians share more than a bloodline - the Cree used to live off the land in sometimes harsh conditions, and the Orcadian men, used to making their living from the land or sea, would have felt a bond with their new friends. Among the performers coming to Scotland will be Joseph Naytowhow, a well-known storyteller in Canada. There will be a series of concerts, workshops, about eight school visits, and outdoor displays of their traditional culture. There will also be a musical performance by the Cree visitors and Orcadian musicians in St Magnus Cathedral. Along with the grant from the SAC, the Canadian visitors are trying to raise more money to fund their trip across the Atlantic. "It is a chance to explore the common heritage of our homes and listen to each others' music," Mrs Foden said. "Although a lot of them may have Scottish blood, they are Cree, and call themselves Cree. "They are taking a risk coming here, they are trusting us that this will be a beneficial visit for them. If it is successful we can move on to other things, and hopefully it will be a foundation for the future." She added: "The Cree have been badly treated over the years, but they believe discovering more about their past, such as events like this, helps them look forward to the future with more optimism."

A living g-grandson of James Perry ANDERSON & Rosa J [WILBURN] has asked me to find PROOF of James Perry's parents and siblings as he does not have a computer. FIRST, has anyone been able to locate James Perry Anderson on the 1870 or 1880 census ??? I have searched the 1870-80 Texas and Louisiana census indexes using every conceivable name variation I can think of but with no results. It is interesting that just about everyone includes James Perry Anderson as a son of Perry Anderson & Nancy Isabella [Bodine] but no one lists any documentation to prove it. The 1910 Shelby Co Tx census provides circumstantial evidence that James Perry Anderson is the brother of William Pinkney Anderson (son of Perry Anderson & Nancy Isabella [Bodine]) as James Perry Anderson's oldest son, John Wright Anderson is listed as William Pinkney Anderson's NEPHEW on that census and he is living next door to James Perry Anderson. 1910 Shelby Co Tx/ED 149/Prec 3/HH 344-344/pg 136b,137a ANDERSON, William/HH/wm age 58 Tx/Tx/Tx/marr 28yrs Anderson, Rosa/wife/wf age 60 Tx/Ar/Ar/ 2m/3 of 4 chn lvg Vaughn, Paul/g-son/wm age 04 Tx/Tx/Tx ANDERSON, Wright/ nephew /wm age 19 Tx/La/Tx/single 1910 Shelby Co Tx/ED 149/Prec 3/HH 344-344/pg 137a ANDERSON, Pery/HH/wm age 43 La/Tx/Tx/1marr 21yrs Anderson, Rosa/wife/wf age 45 Tx/Tx/Ms/1m/5 of 7 chn lvg Anderson, Brittain/son/wm age 18 Tx/La/Tx/single Anderson, Rube/son/wm age 15 Tx/La/Tx/single Anderson, Fannie/dtr/wf age 14 Tx/La/Tx/single Anderson, Rosey/dtr/wf age 11 Tx/La/Tx James Perry Anderson's household showing his son John Wright as John R (i e "Right") born Jan 1890. 1900 Shelby Co Tx/ED /Prec 3/HH 299-305/pg 136b ANDERSON, Perry/HH/wm age 35 born Apr 1867 Tx/Tx/Tx/married 11yrs Anderson, Rosy/wife/wf age 34 born May 1866 Tx/Tx/Tx/ 5 of 7 chn living Anderson, John R/son/wm age 10 born Jan 1890 Tx/Tx/Tx/ Anderson, Ruben/son/wm age 08 born Apr 1892 Tx/Tx/Tx/ Anderson, Brittain/son/wm age 06 born May 1894 Tx/Tx/Tx/ Anderson, Fannie/dtr/wf age 05 born Mar 1896 Tx/Tx/Tx/ Anderson, Ada/dtr/wf age 3mos born Feb 1900 Tx/Tx/Tx MARRIAGES: Wm Pinkney Anderson m Rosa C [Wilburn] James Perry Anderson m Rosa J [Wilburn] John Wright Anderson m Sybil [Lout] Reuben Perry Anderson m Emma [Jacobs] Brittain Anderson m Ada [Brittain] Fannie [Anderson] born Mar 1896 married ??? I am more optimistic now than about an hour ago that the John Anderson family listed in my prior email is related to my 2nd great grandfather, Sven Petter Hansson. The ages of John and Louisa in the 1870 Census match the ages that I have for John based upon his Swedish birth record. The 1860 census has this couple 10 years younger than they should be. In fact, John Anderson and Louisa are listed as 45 and 43 respectively in 1870 which fits in with my info, and the 1880 Census also bears that out. If this John Anderson in Lucas Co., IA is who I believe him to be, his full name is Anders Johan Andersson, born 30 Apr 825 in Pelarne Parish, Kalmar, Smaland, Sweden (should be two dots above the "a" in Smaland). He would be the nephew of my Sven Petter Hansson, also born in Pelarne Parish, in 1812. The children in 1870 are listed as: Albert 16 Mary J. 14 Catherine 12 (listed as Ellen in 1860) Louisa 10 (listed as Adelia L. in 1860) Andrew 7 Sarah 5 If anyone has anything on this family I would greatly appreciate your contacting me.

William Silas Anderson was born and lived in Webster County,West Virginia. In 1925, when Silas was 59 years old, he left to do some work at a neighbor's home and was never seen again. There is reason to believe he ran off with a woman. Stanley J(udd) Anderson, who is Silas' grandson, has written a book, The William S Anderson Family of Northern Webster County West Virginia. The William S in the title is the above Silas' grandfather. I hope to see Judd later this month and will ask if he ever found any more infomation about what happened to Silas after he left home. Sherry, I would be interested in knowing who your cousin is and if she has access to e-mail. I'd like to exchange information with her. Susan

What state or city are we talking about for this W. Silas Anderson or this Stanley Anderson? Eileen -----Original Message----- From: Sherry Breece [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 12, 2004 9:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ANDERSON-L] William Silas Anderson Hi Susan, My cousin is, I think, a great granddaughter of William Silas. She was talking about him the other day, and the thought occurred to me that someone on this message board might come across some record of his burial in their research. I know several people have tried to find his grave. Maybe someone somewhere will see his name. I think she told me someone had written a book about William Silas. She was talking about it. I think she said her cousin, Stanley Anderson, knew more details about the book. Thanks for replying, Sherry __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi Eileen, Susan will correct me if I mis-quote here, but I think William Silas was last located in north western Pa, western New York State, and perhaps in Canada. I think there was some indication he was in those locations. What we would like to find is his final resting place. Thanks, Sherry __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
