    1. [ANCESTRY-TREE-TO-GO-APP] Closing of RootsWeb mailing lists
    2. Lynne
    3. List administrators were recently sent the message below indicating that as of 2 March 2020, all RootsWeb mailing lists would close. Discussion of and queries about the Ancestry Tree-to-Go app should be placed on the message board at <https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/topics.software.acomttg/mb.ashx> The message boards are free to use and only require a one-time registration with a valid email address and a name. Goodbye and best of luck with your family history research. Lynne list admin. Message from RootsWeb: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. > >Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. > >As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. > >Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. > >Sincerely, >The RootsWeb team

    1. [ANCESTRY-TREE-TO-GO-APP] gateway from message board to list
    2. Lynne
    3. Hello all It's been such a very long time since the gateway from the message board to this list has worked, you probably forgot it even existed. If you don't remember what it was, it was a way for any posts made on the message board that corresponds with this list to be posted to the list. It was a one-way system: posts from the board came to the list, but you couldn't post back to the board without actually going to the board and posting there. Anyway, list owners have been told that the gateway will be eliminated altogether. If you've been waiting for the gateway to be fixed, you're out of luck. If you're interested to read what's being said on the matching board -- and most of the time the board is more active than the list -- you need to go to that board and view the posts. Like the mailing lists, the boards are free to use. All you need to do is register once with a name and a working email address. You can view all of the message boards by going to https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/ and then either using the search field to find a particular location, topic, or surname, or by scrolling down to the categories. Goodbye, gateways. I will miss you! Lynne list owner

    1. [ANCESTRY-TREE-TO-GO-APP] RootsWeb news
    2. Lynne
    3. Hello everyone In case you haven't been keeping up with the news, Ancestry has posted additional information about the RootsWeb outage at http://www.rootsweb.com/ I'm very happy to report that the administrative tools now seem to be working and administrators can again take action when messages don't make it to the list because they're too big or have other problems. This is the first in a very long time that Ancestry staff has been communicative about the issues affecting RootsWeb. Excellent progress. A very happy new year to you all! Let's go break down some brick walls. Lynne list admin.

    3. Hello all Please don't click on the link that was included in the previous email purporting to be from me -- I didn't send it. Sorry! My email account was hacked. I've spent the last few hours running various antivirus programs, changing email passwords, and removing the original message from the list archives. Lynne

Author: pete_woodman Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.acomttg/62.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, I've just downloaded the latest version and they're still there. I wouldn't mind but they are totally irrelevant to the people whose records they appear on. For example, mine contains an article about smog in London - except that I've never lived there! They're not there when I look at the records on the PC, which has a big screen, but they're clogging up the display on the Ipad, which has a small screen. All I'm asking for is the ability to turn them off but Ancestry just ignore me whenever I try to communicate with them. I guess the only answer is going to be to stop using the app and go back to browsing with Safari. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: kaufmanj1973 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.acomttg/67/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've come across a variety of the problems that people are posting on this message board, and have a few of my own to add. First, the app doesn't sync trees - it looks like EVERY time there is a change to my online tree, I have to re-download the entire tree to my device. Second, the app stores all of the data it downloads onto my phone's internal memory, which is limited. I have a 128GB external memory card installed, but the app refuses to use it. Third, the app shows duplicates of every photo/image I have for each person. (These duplicates do NOT appear on the desktop Ancestry.com site, nor do they appear in my FTM program; the duplicates only appear on the Android app.) Fourth, it's just INCREDIBLY SLOW! I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S4, and a Galaxy Tab 3, neither of which is a slow piece of equipment, but this app just doesn't move very fast. Author: rphi1017 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.acomttg/65/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can someone explain how the search function is supposed to work in the latest update to the mobile app (11/7/14). As near as I can tell you can now only search by last name. Putting a first name either before or the last name gives ZERO results. The list that comes up from a last name search does not come up in any recognizable order - not alphabetical, not by date of birth, not by date of death. The list is either sorted by some other less obvious criteria or randomly. Any thoughts on this? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would think it should read bride's first, middle, and maiden name and groom's first, middle, and last name.
