She was married in 1831 to John P. Cole and together they had 3 children Margaret (Marietta) Cole, Sarah Louise Cole and Charles Jerome Cole (I am descended through Charles). After John died she married Charles Amy, they had no children together but Charles did have children from his previous marriage. Obituary of Sophia Bates Amy Miss Sophia Bates was born August 10th, 1812, in the town of Danbury (Danby) Vermont. Was married in 1831 to John P. Cole; moved to Buffalo, then to Michigan where Mr. Cole died. Was married in 1853 to Charles Amy and came to Iowa in 1856, residing here ever since to the time of her death, which occurred at her home in this city on Sunday morning, October 10, at 5 o'clock a.m. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church on Tuesday afternoon, October 11 conducted by Rev. E.G. Keith. Mrs. Amy was converted and joined the M.E. Church when but a girl and has been a member ever since. She leaves to mourn her loss three children, sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Mr. Amy many years deceased was county treasurer, clerk and auditor of Calhoun County in its early history, for eleven years. Mrs. Amy will be missed by all her acquaintances as well as her relatives. She has gone to her reward.
