And here we will introduce an exact copy of the record of another proprietors' meeting :Gilhall-Sept 1st 1783 at a Propriators meting of the township of Gilhall to impose taxes on said settlements. This is what was said about Micah Amy and family: MICAH AMY, who is mentioned as joining the settlement in 1775, pitched his tent on what is now the farm of John W. Webb, in Maidstone, as it proved, though. supposed then to be in Giuildhall; and unfortunately for him, farther proved, subsequently, to be included in the ,'Governor's Right' . so that he lost his claim, improvements, etc. His sons-John, William, Micah, and Caleb-settled in Guildhall, and all brought up families in town ; but have since mostly removed, some to Canada, but more to the West. William, usually designated Esq. Amy, was noted as In excellent carpenter and mlllwrlght. Several of his children are now residing in this town and vicinity. He had a son William, more familiarly known as Capt. Amy, who was, we believe, the only one of the family that spent his entire life in this town. He was a most valuable member of the church, of unbounded public spirit, energy and decision. He died, of cancer, May 16, 1845, leaving but one child, now Mrs. Franklin H. Keyes, residing in Massachasetts. The death of Captain Amy was considered a heavy and, we may say, irseparable loss, particularly to the church. The clerk of the church in recording his death, speaks of him as " a valuable and beloved member of the Congregational church." E-mail me directly if you want (sandscheng@aol.com) and I can send you a pdf file or the gedcom if you would like. I have lots of pictures of current family and such. I tried joining the Daughters of the American Revolution through Edward Burns, but they now say they have more stringent rules for membership and I would have to prove he lived or resided in that area...or something like that. SO, I joined under Micah Amy and then am going to submit 2 others this year. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My ancestry goes back to Edward Burns, born near Perthshire, Scotland in 1754. His father died when he was a young boy. He was apprenticed to a silversmith in Liverpool. He being the youngest son, was willed by his father a sum of money, left in the Bank of England; when he became of age he journeyed to London to get his legacy. While there he was forced to join the British army and taken to Quebec, Canada. On landing, knowing he was to fight the Colonist, he and two companions deserted the British troops, crossed the river on the ice and started south. They were captured near the American frontier and taken to Guildhall, VT by WILLIAM AMY, a Revolutionary soldier, a brother of Micah AMY. Edward Burns joined a Connecticut Regiment. After the war he returned to Guildhall, VT and married Abigail Amy before 1788. Town records of Guildhall give thesse children: John born 1788 married Nancy Glass 1812.
