    1. Re: [AMY] John D. Amey
    2. >From what I've seen in the LDS database and elsewhere, it looks strongly as though Lawrence Eighmey (or Emigh) was a descendant of Johan Nicolaus Emigh/Emich, a Huguenot who emigrated with other Palatinates from Germany or Holland during the early 1700s, settling first around Kingston, NY and then in Dutchess County, NY. To this day, by the way, most people with the last name "Emigh" pronounce the name as "Amy." Over the years, many have even changed the spelling to "Amy" or "Amey." (This was particularly true during the War of 1812, when some loyalist Emighs emigrated to Canada.) It's my understanding that, in the old Germanic dialects, the "E" was pronounced like a long "A," and the "ch" or "gh" was barely audible. But Amy, of course, can also be a name of British origins, and so can Amey. In any event, John D. Amey's father, Lawrence Eighmay/Emigh (born 9 May 1782), is listed in genealogical databases as the son of Jeremiah Emigh (born around 1748) and Elizabeth Lossing or Lassing. Jeremiah was in turn the son of Philip Emigh and Gertrude Lossing. This Philip was one of Johan Nicolaus Emigh's sons. To make genealogical research more confusing, though, there were also several other Emigh/Emich lines who settled first in Pennsylvania, rather than New York. The PA progenitors included Christian Ehmig/Emigh/Emich, Johan George Emich, and Conrad Emich. Other variants of the name -- also derived from the original Emich or Emig -- include Amigh, Emy, Emeigh, Eighmay, and Amick. I know of a few Emighs (with that spelling) who migrated into New England during the 1700s and 1800s, too. But as far as I'm aware, none of them moved to Vermont back then. So the Amy family of Vermont was probably not related to these folks at all. On a quick search, I didn't come across the name of Mary Brakest. But that doesn't mean she isn't listed out there, somewhere! Jacqueline P. Emigh In a message dated 3/11/2007 12:52:54 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Nanvanwie@aol.com writes: Here is our Amey line: John D. Amey born 21 Feb 1806 in NY state married Lucinda Granger. They lived in Hartsville, Steuben, NY. John was the son of Lawrence Eighmey born 9 May 1782, who married Mary Brakest. I have no idea where they were born. Can anyone out there help me with a connection? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: vmcgui Surnames: Amy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.amy/100.1.2.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, I have read the same passage about Micah, but I read it as Micah has a son William not a brother. I wonder what others think? Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, pp 1003-1004 Biography of Micah AMY (p 1003) Micah AMY, who is mentioned as joining the settlement [Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont] in 1775, pitched his tent on what is now the farm of John W. WEBB in Maidstone [Essex County, Vermont], as it proved, though supposed then to be in Guildhall; and unfortunately for him, further proved, subsequently, to be included in the "Governor's Right;" so that he lost his claim, improvements, etc. His sons, John, William, Micah, and Caleb, settled in Guildhall, and all brought up families in town; but have since mostly removed, some to Canada, but more to the West. William, usually designated Esq. AMY, was noted as an excellent carpenter and millwright. Several of his children are now residing in this town and vicinity. He had a son William, more familiarly known as Capt. AMY, who was, we believe, the only one of the family that spent his entire life in this town. He was a most valuable member of the church, of unbounded public spirit, energy and decision. He [William AMY, aka Capt. AMY] died of cancer 16 May 1845, leaving but one child, now Mrs. Franklin H. KEYES, residing in Massachusetts. The death of Captain AMY was considered a heavy and, we may say, irreparable loss, particularly to the church. The clerk of the church in recording his death, speaks of him as "a valuable and beloved member of the Congregational church." Caleb AMY, long known as Maj. AMY, married Rebecca, daughter of Benoni CUTLER, lived in this town [Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont] sixty or more years, and then removed to Cattaraugus County, New York. Mrs. AMY is still living [1867], at the age of eighty-eight, the only survivor of the family of Benoni CUTLER. Major AMY was one of the most active militia officers, and a man of the greatest integrity, amiability, and neighborly kindness, beloved by all. [Guildhall was organized in 1764 and Essex County created in 1792. The independent sovereignty of Vermont became a state in 1791.] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
