Author: marywall59 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.amy/167.4.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: hI, I have been working on this puzzle quite extensively lately. I put this away for several months. I have researched all of Micah (Sr) sons, Micah Jr, John, William, Caleb and Abraham (son of John Amy and Mary Mathes) to no avail. John Amy* did not have a son named Thomas. *John Amy is a little sketchy, I did find his Christening record in 1758. Caleb had all girls (son of Micah Sr), Abraham Sr had a son Abraham Jr. Abrahm Jr married Laura Fuller Smith. They had no son named Thomas. William had one daughter that I could find. I am at a dead end, again. I have got re-energized interest in this. I find that it is good to take a break from time to time. I agree, Thomas may not be linked to Micah Sr. I could only find a Moses Amy that we may be linked to, however I doubt it. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: vitoman99 Surnames: Amy, Gabriel Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.amy/167.4.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I see you wrote this in October 2009, so I hope you are still watching this thread. There is no real evidence that the Thomas from Bloomfield is Micah Amy's son. There is a VT birth record for the children of Micah Amy that lists a Thomas, but the rest is speculation. I, too believe that the answer to this will start in NY since that is where Thomas' first three children were born. Generally, a couple married where they met. There were many Amy's in NY as you have already discovered. Lawrence Amy is another one that was born in 1800 as well as John born in 1806. The only thing that bothers me is that Thomas consistently states that he was born in VT. The Thomas that lived in Steele Co., also states that he too was born in VT. His death date of 2 Sept 1884 and his birth date listed as 26 Sep 1806 makes him the more conclusive one to be Micah's son. The Thomas that died in MN can be found in the 1850 census in North Bend, Washington Co., WI living with this wife Rahannah and daughter Matilda. It states that his daughter was born in Ohio. In 1860 Matilda can be found living in Kewaskum, Washington County, WI married to George Gabriel who was born in France. In 1850 George Gabriel was in Eden, Erie County, NY living with his mother Mary Gabriel. His youngest brother Jacob was born in NY in 1832. In 1870 Thomas is living next door to his daughter Matilda and George in Aurora, Steele Co., MN. Matilda has three children: Madora, Lilly and George, who would of course be a direct descendant of this Thomas. In 1880 Thomas is living with George who by this time has remarried a woman named Martha. Daughter Lilly and son Geroge are still living at home. On 2 Sep 1884 Thomas Amy died. His death record states that he was born 26 Sep 1806. His daughter Matilda Amy Gabriel was born 30 Mar 1839 and died in Aurora, Steele Co., MN 29 Mar 1879. The death records come from the Aurora Cemetery in Steele County, MN. There are three Thomas Amy's born around the same time that state they were born in VT. This Thomas Amy has more evidence that points to him being the son of Micah. Searching for any descendants of George Gabriel, Jr. might be one way to find some answers. It might just be that the Gabriel family history could be the key. Is you last name Melat, coming from the Mellott, Malott, Merlott family line? I would be interested to learn what you know of the Amy family from the 1950's. I am related to George Amy who was my grandfather's cousin. What I know is that he was an officer in the British Royal Army during WWI, was the last owner of the family home on Jersey and died sometime after 1977 which was the last time that my family had contact with him. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: KippMelat Surnames: Amy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.amy/167.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Abraham/Abram Amy who also settled in Crawford Co., PA. I think you are on to something by suggesting that Thomas of Crawford Co is not the son of Micah. But I am interested in knowing what evidence there is that points to Thomas of Crawford Co. being the son of Micah? I do have a working theory of who Thomas and Abraham are, but I must first state that I have no proof, and I certainly can't say one way or another if Thomas of Crawford is the son of Micah or not. But here is my working theory: Abraham, Thomas, and Eastman (who was also in Crawford Co, but later moved to Michigan) are brothers, sons of John Amy of Crown Point, Essex Co., NY. I have seen some claims that John was a son of Micah Sr.--but again I have no proof. My working theory is based purely on census records and several references that Abraham came to Crawford Co from Crown Point, Essex Co. OK, so here is the census records I have used to piece this together. 1820, Crown Point Essex Co., NY John Amy, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female over 45 Abraham Amy, 1 male 16-26, 2 males over 45 1830 Schroon, Essex Co., NY John Amy, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30,1 female 50-60 Abraham Amy, 2 males under 5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 20-30 Thomas Amy, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 15-20 (household next to John) 1840 Rockdale Tp., Crawford Co., PA Abraham Amy, 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 70-80 Thomas Amy, 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 40-50 Eastman Amy, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 80-90 Further, in 1850, Abraham remained in Rockdale and Thomas was in Bloomfield Tp., Crawford Co. Also in Bloomfield Tp. was the household of William and Louisa Martin which included a Martha Amy, aged 77. All were born in NY. Haven't been able to find this Martin family in 1840, but I wonder if Louisa is not a sister of Abraham, Thomas, and Eastman, and Martha is their mother? Again, all of this is speculation and some of the answer may lie in Essex Co. NY. I would certainly appreciate any comments on my theory. He was living with his parents in Cleveland, OH in the 1860 and 1880 census. In the 1860 census, it states his father's name was Donald, but in the 1880 census, it says Daniel. Not sure which one is correct. Clarence married a Bessie (unknown last name, possibly Wier/Weir) in about 1895. They were living with her daughter, Nettie, in the 1900 census in Columbiana Co. OH. In 1910, Clarence was no longer married to Bessie, but to his former stepdaughter, Nettie, and living in PA. In the 1920 and 1930 census, he and Nettie were living in Battle Creek, MI.
