My gggggrandfather, Andrew Baker (or Andreas Becker), was "released from barracks" in Winchester, VA by a permit signed December 11, 1782 by Col. James Wood. Family records can find nothing about him in Winchester or Frederick County, VA prior to this 1782 "permit," but he is well-documented in Winchester after that time. Could this indicate that he was a Hessian POW held in Winchester? Any help is appreciated.
Hello, I'm sure there are better informed folks to respond, but I haven't seen any responses yet so I'll weigh in. I'd say, given what you've related, that there's a strong possibility that he was a German soldier. He could have been one, like my Braunschweig soldier ancestor, who was among those marched up the Valley near the end of the War from Charlottesville where they had been barracked for several years. My ancestor, I believe, was allowed to "wander off" and settled in Rockingham County. Others went on to Winchester and, I believe, barracks in Lancaster, Penn. I checked my copy of Claus Reuter's Brunswick Troops in North America, but did not find Andreas Becker (Andrew Baker). It's also possible he wasn't a Brunswicker but a German soldier from one of the other areas in Germany (Hesse, Ansbach, etc.). It would pay to check "Hetrina"--the other major compilation of German auxiliary soldiers.
