Harold, In case your ancestor turns out to be a soldier from Brunswick rather than a Hessian soldier, there are 11 Hartmanns shown in "Brunswick Troops in North America 1776-1783 Index of All Soldiers Who Remained in North America" by Claus Reuter. Does your family tradition include any information other than that your ancestor was a Hessian soldier - such as was he a deserter, a POW, enlisted in the Continental Army - which could give you a potential clue as to how to proceed? Mary, It is my understanding, all Germanic soldiers were considered Hessians by the colonists. It did not matter where they came from or what unit they were part of. None of them were actually Hessians. That was a term applied by the colonists and only two principalities have Hesse in their names. here Is the list: In early 1776, King George III of England hired units from the various houses or states of Germanic area of Europe, to assist with bringing the the colonist's rebellion to order. The hiring of foreign troops to supplement a country's army was a normal procedure during this time of history. Several of the German rulers, needing hard currency and being "between wars", were only too happy to oblige. They were Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (a principality in northern Hesse) King George III's brother in law, his son William, count of Hesse-Hanau and nephew to King George III; Charles I, Duke of Brunswick; Frederick, Prince of Waldeck; Charles Alexander, Margrave of Anspach-Bayreuth; and Frederick Augustus, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. 1. Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (a principality in northern Hesse) 2.William, count of Hesse-Hanau and nephew to King George III; 3. Charles I, Duke of Brunswick; 4. Frederick, Prince of Waldeck; 5. Charles Alexander, Margrave of Anspach-Bayreuth; 6. Frederick Augustus, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. nelda Nelda L. Nelda, Yes, it appears that all German soldiers were described as "Hessians" by the colonists whether they came from Hesse or not. I worded my response as I did since Claus Reuter's book, to which I made reference, pertained only to Brunswick troops. I don't remember which book I read where the author pointed out that although the colonists referred to all the German soldiers as "Hessians", the soldiers themselves would have referred to themselves and thought of themselves by whereever they came from: i.e., those from Brunswick would have thought of themselves as Brunswickers not Hessians; those from Waldeck would have thought of themselves as Waldeckers, etc. Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nelda Percival" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2012 12:08 AM Subject: Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Hessian Soldiers - Hartmann > > Mary, > It is my understanding, all Germanic soldiers were considered Hessians by > the colonists. Absolutely Mary, But since the man being looked for was considered a Hessian by the colonists referring to him by his correct terminology, could confuse the person asking the questions since they know nothing about either. That was all I was trying to point out. You did an excellent job of pointing the person in the right direction. They should try there first. nelda Nelda L.
