Fusilier. So named for a weapon, the "Fusil", another French word for a musket-like weapon that was of smaller caliber than the common musket. Although, at this time in the Hessian army, there was no difference in the kinds of muskets carried by fusiliers, musketiers, or Grenadiers. The Hessian fusilier regiments were all created (actually redesignated existing regiments) by Landgraf Frederick in the early 1760's in imitation of similarly named regiments in the Prussian Army. The name was not necessarily permanent. The Erbprinz fusilier regiment was redesignated as a musketier regiment in 1780. According to your site, he was in the K-7, Kassel Fuselier Regt. von Knyphausen. I understand that von Knyphausen was the commander of the regt, and I understand that Kassel is refering to a place in Germany.....but does "Fuselier" mean "fuse-lighter"? I looked at the other names "Musketier", "Grenadier",etc--Musket and Grenade, correct? When I do a search for the meaning of Fuselier, I keep finding it used as a surname. I looked and looked through your site, so I hope I didn't miss something you clearly posted. > >Thank you for any information you can > give me. > >Dani [email protected] > >############################### >FOUNDER: John H.
