Hello List, Does anyone know of any sources that could help me chronicle the travels, locations and battles of the 1st Ansbach company from their landing in America all the way until their departure for Germany? I want to recreate my ancestor’s journey, and as usual am finding it very challenging trying to locate information on the Internet about the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment. I know there is information to be had, but it seems a lot of it is under lock and key in Germany, and/or in the hands of private collectors, so I need to find out just what’s available to the average person that’s written in the English language. I have also seen the large Bibliography of the holdings that the United States Army lists under the American Revolution, but it’s a little overwhelming to me and I don’t know where to begin. Of course I will start with the Döhla and Popp diaries which have a lot of information about their movements, but I really don’t have any experience researching military history and could use a steer in the right direction. John Merz told me that the Ansbachers were attached directly to British generals Howe and Clinton and served at Philadelphia, Newport, Springfield and Yorktown. Can anyone recommend good histories of these battles/campaigns which emphasize the Hessian involvement, or documents written by the regimental commanders? Has anyone written up a paper on the Ansbachers’ movements during the war (I think I will look into the JSHA archives for that)? I also would like to get a visual impression of the soldiers, but I’ve read there are no portraits of the uniform from that time, only general descriptions, and wonder if a reenactor group might exist. Any help will be greatly appreciated. You can contact me off list if you wish. Thanks, Marie Rasnick Fetzer
Have you looked into the translations of diaries by Bruce E. Burgoyne? Defet, Disaster and Dedication has diaries of officers in the Hessse-Cassel von Knyphause and von Lossberg Regiments. Ronald J.
