Are their lists of prisoners held there? My ancestor, Heinrich Adam Nollner, appeared in Petersburg, VA70 miles southeast of C'ville, in mid-1780s as Henry A. Nollner. His 1843 obituary said "he fought in the late revolution." but I haven't been able to find him associated with troops on either side. He was born in Treffurt in 1761. A descendant post WWII visited and found his roots, but not yhe military service. Carol A. I can't figure out from looking at a map if Treffurt was in the duchy of Brunswick-Lunnenberg or not, but the majority of the troops in the POW barracks at Charlottesville were from there and not one of the Hesse duchies. Although I think there was one unit of Jaegers which were actually Hessians. See wikipedia for discussion on where the troops under General/Baron von Riedesel were from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germans_in_the_American_Revolution#Braunschweig-Wolfenb.C3.BCttel_.28.22Brunswick.22.29 They were captured at the battle of Saratoga, NY and marched from there to Charlottesville and from C'ville through Winchester to Reading, PA. They were also known as the Convention Army. The Baron and his wife both wrote memoirs about their experiences here in America which give a much better account of what happened than most historical records which seem to slant towards the British version of what happened. Both the memoirs are available through inter-library loan. There is a book which lists every member of the Brunswickers who stayed in America, where they were from, and what happened to them (not necessarily where they ended up more specifically than stayed in America). The book is written by Claus Reuter, "Brunswick troops in North America, 1776-1783 : index of all soldiers who remained in North America" I found this book in the reference section at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA. I know it is also available in C'ville, but am not sure if it is in Univ of VA or the C'ville historical society. You can also buy online for $25+. For my ancestor, the last name was spelled differently so we had to validate by age, first name, similarity of last name, what happened to him (sold himself to American, ie indentured himself).
