Hello All, Some here have worked with me on my Swartz and most of my reading was relating to one of the three of that name listed in all the reference books who was the Saratoga Swartz. I have been able to rule to rule out the deserter to CA and feel now I can eliminate the Saratoga Schwartz. I have a few questions before I read even more about the Wilhelm Schwartz who is from Hesse Cassel and wonder if someone would be willing to work with me. It is hard to trust what one reads if they dont understand the whole. I will list the William Swarts I am working with and wonder if he fits the Wikipedia article I quote that follows. According to German military records, the regiment was raised in <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Hersfeld> Bad Hersfeld, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesse-Kassel> Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel), <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany> Germany. On January 21, 1776 the Regiment marched from Hersfeld, embarking in Carlstadt at Bremerlehe on March, 23. They sailed for America on April 17, 1776, and landed at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island> Staten Island, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York> New York on August 15. They fought in the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_White_Plains> Battle of White Plains on October 28, 1776 and participated in the capture of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport,_Rhode_Island> Newport, Rhode Island July 29 to August 31, 1778 as well as other minor actions. On November 12, 1783 the Regiment sailed from New York for Bremerlehe, returning to the garrison at Hersfeld on May 28, 1784. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musketeer_Regiment_Prinz_Carl#cite_note-0> [1] Although the official history of the unit does not give precise details of its movements, there are indications of other operations: According to a Sep. 23, 1777 letter from Lieutenant General Sir <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Clinton_(1738%E2%80%931795)> Henry Clinton, to Gen. Sir <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howe,_5th_Viscount_Howe> William Howe, the Regiment participated in an incursion into <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey> New Jersey from the 12th to the 16th of September, 1777. Also, a report of a Hessian deserter from 28 August,1782, found in <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington> George Washington's papers, indicates this regiment, along with "the Regt. of Wesebach & Angenella together with Fanning's Corps., & 7th British Reg., came lately from <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah,_Georgia> Savannah & are now on Long Island, very weak in number and very sickly. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musketeer_Regiment_Prinz_Carl#cite_note-1> [2]" In this report, "7th British Regt. is likely the " <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Regiment_of_Foot> 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fuzileers)" under Lt. Gen. Richard Prescott, who had been ordered to Savannah on 22 December, 1781. "Fanning's Corps." is probably the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalist_(American_Revolution)> loyalist " <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_American_Regiment> King's American Regiment" "Angenella" is probably the "Grenadier Regt. von d'Angelelli." And, the "Regt. of Wesebach" likely refers to the Hessian "Regt. von Wissenbach", although von Knoblauch had taken command by that time. The British forces evacuated Savannah on July 11, 1782.
