    1. [AMREV-HESSIANS] Michael and Henrich Schmidt of Bottendorf - Hessian soldiers who stayed in America
    2. John Vanko
    3. Two brothers, Michael Schmidt (born 1749) and Henrich Schmidt (born 1753; <in his village "Heinrich" was not used, but rather "Henrich"; he would have answered to "Heinrich" nevertheless>) of Bottendorf, kreis Frankenberg, Hessen, Germany, came to America as Hessian soldiers. Michael served in the regiment Huyn. Henrich was drafted into the regiment Ditfurth. Both left their regiments during the war, deserters presumably. Apparently there is a record of Michael in 1777 at Rhode Island (I do not have this document), and apparently Henrich left his regiment in 1782. I believe these dates come from German documents written by the respective commanding officers back to Germany. Michael and Henrich did not die in action. My interest is to discover anything about their lives and descendants in America. I have looked on the AMREV-HESSIANS list of Hessian deserters and find no Michael, and only a few Heinrichs. Most of the Heinrichs are the incorrect regiment, one is uncertain, and one is unknown. Any suggestions?
