I have the same question "How does one look up a Germanic Soldier who did ot stay here?" I've been working 'present to past' looking for our 'rumored' family Hessian oldier. I recently reached the 'end of the American line' with my -G-G-Grandfather: 'John M. Ziegler' Born Bavaria, Dec 4, 1816, Died Dec 18, 1894 - buried: t John's Cemetery, Queens, New York (family plot with beautiful monument). I am about to take out a subscription on Ancestry.com so that I can begin earching German records. Don't really know where to go from here - time ill tell. I've also run into the same problems too. My German side of the family was from Darmstadt, Hesse; Lichenfels, Bavaria and Hosum, Schleswig-Holstein. If I did have 'Hessian' ancestors they too went back to Germany after the war. Cory: Just so you know before you invest a lot of money into the international records at ancestry. About 95% of the records are in German and most of them do not cover farther back than WW1.
