Dear Stuart, I think you are going on to the right track - and light is at the end of the tunnel. Somewhere in your neighbourhood is a Genealogical an/or Historical Society who will have my book "The Hessians of Upper Canada", in which you will find two Henry/Heinrich Merckel's listed, the one actually is a John Henry, and that one settled in Marysburgh, Quinte Isle, near Belleville. Since I retired this summer, I have donated all my Hessian research material concerning those who settled in Canada, to the Marilyn Adams Genealogical Research Centre in Ameliasburg, Ontario, check http://www.quinte-kin.com They will have my books for sale, but have copies there for look-ups. Wish you good luck, it was my pleasure getting you on the right track.
