    3. Hello Carolyn; this is the first message I read this morning, and having had a good breakfast, read the paper which didn't much excite me today, your search gave me a bit of a jolt, and as you see, my brain started to click - Yes, there is a Hessen-Kassel soldier vom the Regiment v.Lossberg with the name of Arnold BITTER, he was a Trenton prisoner in 1776, and I was able to check my old computer's disk for his PDF, well, he sure is not identical with yours. But hold on - In my GUIDE right above the name of BITTER, there is listed a name for which in all my long years of research I have not received one single solitary enquiry from anybody, which makes me believe that this man in all likelihood changed his name, shortened it or whatever. His name was Heinrich BITTENHOLZER, he was with the Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment which was captured at Yorktown, VA., in October 1781, at that time under the command of Lord Cornwallis, who surrendered his army at that time to General Washington. The prisoners were taken inland to Frederick, Maryland. In May 1783, after peace was announced, the prisoners were ordered to march to New York to join their Regiments for transfer home. Heinrich Bittenholzer however decided to remain in the USA and in June deserted, anyway, that's what his officer reported. We have not heard from him again and I suspect that he most likely shortened his name, who wants to listen to this 'tongue-breaker' BITTENHOLZER, when BITTER could do much better. This is just a hunch of mine, not scientifically nailed down, but then these name changes have confounded others for generations. My 2 Canadian pennies worth, cheerfully, John Helmut Merz.
