Forwarded to AMREV-HESSIANS-L@ & HESSENLAND-L@ mail lists: From: "Nelson Sulouff" <zuli@sprintmail.com> Sent: Saturday, October 23, 2004 5:39 PM > ================================== > Source: SULOUFF-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SULOUFF & SULOFF] Sulouff Family > > Hello Richard and Charlene, > > Thanks for your response and for the additions you have contributed to the Sulouff>Suloff Family History. When I added your daughter, Gwen, to the list of descendants for our immigrant ancestor, Johannes Zulauf, she became the 2203rd descendant on record. Your wife, Charlene, became the 1104th spouse of descendants on record. Those still living are scattered widely throughout the USA and with several living in foreign countries. I would estimate that those with the Sulouff or Suloff surname currently alive would number less than 500 and possibly as few as 300. > > I'm trying to figure out who the Roy Sulouff is that you met at the Sunbury armory. I know about my first cousin, Roy, who is also a first cousin of your grandfather, Carl Sulouff; but he is now 63 years old and I am puzzled about what he would be doing at the armory. I have him listed as a locksmith by trade.Would you kindly try to find out for me who are parents of the Roy Sulouff you met at the armory? > > Incidentally I was a member of the 190th FA Group at the Sunbury armory from June 1948 until September 1950 when we were federalized during the Korean "conflict." Will you tell me if the 190th FA Group is a unit currently at the Sunbury armory? > > Concerning a coat of arms for the Sulouff surname, I have been contacted at least three times by persons pretending to have researched the surname and promising to provide a European coat-of-arms for a price. Beware such scam offers. The Sulouff surname was invented by a Hessian soldier who arrived in America on 15 Aug 1776. His surname was consistently spelled Zulauf in his military documents and it appears also in his 1783 marriage record. However, in the same year he got married the tax record for Robeson Twp., Berks Co., spells his name Sulouf. After he moved to Juniata Co. in 1802 he appears quite consistently with the surname Sulouff, but in 1828 he signed his will as Johannes Zulauf. John Sulouff is the name inscribed on his gravestone at the Old Church Hill Cemetery outside of Port Royal, Pa. > > If you want to search for a family coat-of-arms you will need to search in Germany for the surname Zulauf. You will not find the name Sulouff in Germany. I have traced our Zulauf line back into the early 1700's in Hesse, Germany, but I have not been able to identify for certain the line from which Johannes Zulauf came. A family tradition passed down from the immigrant's youngest daughter, Elizabeth (Zulauf) Noetling, says Johannes Zulauf's father was named Walter Zulauf and that he died in Germany during the Seven-Years War (1756-63). That is as far back as I have been able to accumulate information on our surname. > > Thanks again for your response. It is much appreciated. > > Nelson R.
