Good Afternoon, I'm new at this, but it looks as though I can just ask a question, so here goes. "The History of The Town of Rockingham, Vermont" shows my ancestor as John Casper Shana Wolf, a Hessian soldier who was probably in the battle of Saratoga and walked away from his companions in Leominster, Mass. when they were marched to Virginia in 1778. We know he married in Leominster before moving to Rockingham, but this has always been a dead end for my family until we were recently given a page from "500 Brickwall Solutions to Genealogy Problems" that said his name was really Johann Caspar Shoenewolff from Rotterode in Kassel-Hesse, born there January 26, 1755. I have been in contact with the park rangers at Saratoga National Historic Park and they cannot find a proper match for either John Wolf or Johann Shoenewolff on their muster lists for that battle. We would really like to confirm his activities in the war and where he originated from in Germany. Does anyone know more or have any ideas? Jack Wolfe
Jack, this was a real good move of yours, and I am glad you did ask - because "he who does not ask, will get no answers". Well as far as getting an answer from me - you are out of luck, because all my Hessian research material for Hessians who remained in the U.S.A. is on its way to the HQ of the Sons of the Americam Revolution in Louisville, Kentucky, and in a few weeks or months will be available for Hessian soldier researchers. But I don't think you have to wait that long - this mail lists archive is full of information about your man - try the keyword archive and try the different spellings - Schoenewolf - Schoenewolff - Wolf - Wolff and you may find some under - Shana - If you are really interested in Hessian soldier history, try the other -month by month- archive, absolutely amazing what you find !!
