    3. Hello Russ, Bob, and Karen; Although it is late and I am tired, I think we are on the brink of finding the true "CONRAD BUTT", and I want you to know that the e-mail of Karen might have put us on the right track. Perhaps Bob can check out the name Konrad BOETTEN, of the 3.Company of the Ansbach Regt. misspelled in Doehla's book as Private Paethen, pages 142 and 152. Cheers, John Merz ----- Original Message ----- From: Zwonk@aol.com Sent: Sunday, July 03, 2005 6:48 AM Subject: Re: [HESSIAN] PML Search: Ansbach Soldier Leonhard BUSCH In a message dated 7/2/2005 8:19:55 PM Central Standard Time, jmerz@cogeco.ca writes: Karen & John, You will recognize in the contents of the original eMail a description of my forebear Conrad Butt whose daughter married Leonard Baugh/Bach's daughter. If we could find substantiating sources for the story, it might go a long way in identifying where Leonard and Conrad arose. This is exciting stuff. Best Wishes Russ Ehler

Städtler lists: Boetten, Konrad, Gemeiner. A III. Des. 31. 5. 81. "A III" is Städtler's unit code for the company commanded by "Stain" whom Städtler omits from his lists. Von Eelking identifies him as "Heinrich Carl Friedrich von Stein [zum Reitzenstein]" with rank of Captain from 09 Feb 1777; i.e., he was promoted to Captain for the expedition to America. A cursory scan of the dates of desertion on Städtler's list did not reveal another desertion on that date. Bob Brooks

    3. Just a last thought on the part of mine - these two Ansbach soldiers escaped both in the vicinity of the James River, Boettgen on the 31. May 1781 and Busch on the 7. Aug. 1781, and they sure knew each other. Boettgen deserted after some rather hard punishment he received for a previous desertion attempt. Can't really blame him, I would have done the same.
