    3. Western Maryland History states "On the First of August, 1769, Dr. Phillip Thomas located at Frederick (MD) and was followed by Dr. John Fischer and by Dr. John N A Bogen. The latter was a Hessian and for some time was confined at the "Barracks" as a prisoner of war. After the war he married a daughter of Henry Koontz and occupied the office on West Patrick St Where the office of B F Brown is now located." Frederick County marriage records state that an Anthony Frederick Bogen married a Mary Koontz on 7 Sep 1784. Questions I am trying to answer are: 1) Was John N A Bogen a Hessian soldier or was he simply confined in the "Barracks" because he was a Hessian at the time of the war, 2) Given that the only marriage record shown in Frederick "After the war" between a Koontz and a Bogen is "Anthony Frederick Bogen" to Mary Koontz on 7 DEC 1784, is it possible that "Anthony Frederick Bogen" is actually the John N(icholas) A(ndrew) Bogen, MD mentioned in Western Maryland Hi! story and, 3) If they are not the same person, are they Brothers and did they both marry Koontz girls and fight in the revolution? The 1790 Frederick Cnty, Maryland census shows Baltzer Koontz living next door to Frederick Bogen. My Grandfather is Baltzer Koontz born in this area about 1765. Is he the Brother of the Mary that married either Frederick or John Bogen? Also, there is a Henry Koontz, Jr. and Sr. living nearby Baltzer and Frederick who would likely be the "Father " of the "Koontz Daughter" mentioned in Western Maryland History. Does anyone have any information on these Bogen Hessians? If so you may help the thousands of Koontz ancestors who need to identify the parents of Baltzer Koontz, Sr. Anything I have I will gladly share with anyone that needs it. Al Ball

    3. Hello Al Ball and Hessian list subscribers; since I haven't seen anybody responding as yet, although anybody with access to Hetrina III could have done so, and I myself gave all my research material away, so the only thing I can rely on is my 'Guide', where on page 48 is a line: BOGEN, Nikolaus, K-2, S#133, D1-6/1783 N.Y., S#25 PA-Oaths. Btw. K-2 means Hessen-Kassel Regiment Erbprinz, D1-6/1783 N.Y. means discharged in New York June 1783. Somebody got more information, please help this man, don't rely on me anymore, I am still reading this, but I can't help. Regards, John Merz. retired on Lake Ontario in Canada. 3. Thank you Johnny and others who responded to my inquiry. Many of my family are late from Ft Wayne, Indiana where there is a Hessen Cassel nearby and, in fact a Hessen Cassel Road. When I was a small child I lived with my Koontz Grandmother and had many friends in the neighborhood and we were very active and mischievous. When calling us into the house my Grandmother would occasionally say "Get into this house you little Hessians". I'm not sure where she got the expression. She was French-Irish-German educated to only the sixth grade and I'm not sure she new the historical context of the phrase. Her husband was a descendant of the Palatines in Maryland and they, of course, had contact with the Hessians at Frederick. She was born in the 1880's and it would seem that any judgements relating to the Hessian activity in the Revolutionary War would have long passed. It could have carried over from her Pennsylvania German (Klinger) roots. Nonetheless, I never got the impression there was any prejudice or ill-will involved. I'm not asking a question here. Just rambling about Hessians. It's fascinating to me. Anyone interested in the Koontz lineage from Maryland feel free to contact me to see if we have in matches in the 17 and 1800's. ----- Original Message ----- From: "john" <jmerz@cogeco.ca> To: <AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2005 3:40 PM Subject: Re: [HESSIAN] JOHN N A BOGEN > Hello Al Ball and Hessian list subscribers; > since I haven't seen anybody responding as yet, although > anybody with access to Hetrina III could have done so, > and I myself gave all my research material away, so the only > thing I can rely on is my 'Guide', where on page 48 is a line: > > BOGEN, Nikolaus, K-2, S#133, D1-6/1783 N.Y., S#25 PA-Oaths. > > Btw.
