    1. [Hessian] Schaeffer at Reading...
    2. Jeri Schindler
    3. John Once again I am indebted to you! I do so very much appreciate all the information from you--and all the list members. As I pointed out I'm new to genealogy and to this Hessian search in particular. On the chance that something here might help somebody on the list--- Re: Christian Schaeffer (the "e" after the "a" is for the missing umlaut) I know quite a bit about his life in Berks County, PA, but I've never been sure where in Germany he came from. The info about Bad Nauheim came from another list and also most recently from one Daniel Quinn, (a list member???). Quinn offers sources, which I'm eager to get. A cousin with whom I share a great grandfather wrote a brief family history in which she says that Christian and two brothers "from Stuttgart were members of a military unit... " in the AMREV. After which they settled in PA. Maybe "Stuttgart" saved lots of explaining? Wish I had names for those two brothers. And family lore has him captured at Trenton. About age 15: I had his birth in 1755 which makes a 15-yr-old at Trenton impossible. Thus I opted to get the POW Trenton list just to be sure. He wasn't there. That Trenton battle is so well known that many put their soldier there, whether or not. For Christian I have: b. 26 Feb 1755; d. 18 Feb 1829, buried Oley Cemetery, Spangsville, Oley Twp, PA m. Anna Margaretha Hoch on 1 Jan 1788 German Reformed Church of Philadelphia b. 22 Nov 1762 d. 10 Jul 1843 D. Quinn notes that since Berks Co. was largely Quaker a visiting minister of the Reformed Church would have performed the ceremony. But the marriage records are kept at the Mother Church in Phila. Also from Mr. Quinn comes: Christian was a prisoner at the Reading PA Hessian Camp. He was 15 when captured (This is the story in our family too--but from where comes the data?) He worked as a prisoner for a local cattle drover named Hoch. After the war he married Hoch's daughter. He bought a farm down the road from the camp and later more land on Schaffer Street in Boyertown. And I have farms in Exeter, Oley, and Boyertown (census and tax records put him there) Christian and Anna had eight children--I have info on all eight, but am sadly lacking birth and death dates for the one who is my ancestor--Samuel Schaffer. Once again, John, Thank you. Jeri Yes, everyone--but the tax collector--knows me as Jeri. My German Grossmutter pronounced it "chedi." She was a gem who spoke 5 languages. I speak only two and sadly one is not German.
