Greetings: I want to offer my thoghts about the recent Schaefer communications re Quaker, Lutheran of the Reformed Church, etc. Yes, there were Quakers in Exeter Twp, Berks County, established 1752. To say that it was a Quaker township or county would be inaccurate. The predominent Protestant faiths at that time were Lutheran or Reformed. They are not the same. (There were not any Catholics yet to speak of.) In many areas there were many more Reformed than Lutheran, although today the word Lutheran is definitely more recognizable. The Reformed Church changed it's name several times, and the most recent appelation that people might recognize is the UCC Church. People from that area (Southeastern PA) know this. My personal bias is that it never should have changed, and should have stayed Reformed Church. These were of course the German/ Swiss Calvinists, theological descendants of Zwingli also, who often shared "union churches" in the Homeland and also here in the "Neuland". Similar to Presbyterians in the English-speaking world and were often referrred to as such, even though they had German language services. They were also close to the Mennonites in theology. The Reformeds have a proud tradtion, Franklin and Marshall itself being established by Reformed leaders early on. I'm not surprised Schaefer was Reformed. About 40-45% of all PA Germans were Reformed, in Berks possibly more. Edward Quinter Allentown PA
