You may also remember that Revolutionary War history mentions that the Quakers were religious pacifists, the earliest recognized conscientious objectors, and could claim exclusion from compulsory militia enrollment and military service. Not all did so. There are many examples of Quaker's serving in the state militia's and the Continental Army. It seemed largely to be based on the Quaker Meeting and individual choice. In fact, the Rev. War experience did much to undermine the Quaker's and to cause the nonconformists to migrate west. The Quaker's, as a unified religious movement, never truly recovered their former prestige. Some of the Patriots became actively anti-Quaker and in many communities this set the tone. Gen.
