Hi Barb, > I'm curious about the information that Berks County was largely Quaker. OOPS! I had previously checked the Berks County list of churches and found the baptismal records of many descendents of Christian Schaffer--all Lutherans of the Reformed Church, as was he. The Quaker info came from List-member Daniel Quinn. Actually, he states that "Exeter was Quaker. The Schaffers were Reformed mostly." I certainly misquoted him--mea culpa, my apologies to you and the List. While in the county, Exeter it is not the County. Dan Quinn's Schaffers arrived in the early 1700s and just what the religious breakdown was at that time I don't know. Jeri
Jeri etal, While there were Quakers in Berks Co., it appears that many others who were Reformed German or anabaptist faiths were listed as Quakers in the Loyalty Oath lists because they would not swear an oath, but affirmed their loyalty instead. BTW, Exeter is a township formed in 1741, while Berks was still part of Philadelphia Co.
