I checked, and at the moment there is no Westfall family surname project underway, nor a Hession project. You may want to start one, or both. The URL below will take you to the information you need to do so. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asp Best Wishes, Eric Olson ericbear@pcweb.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "peggyt" <peggyt@early.com> To: <AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 9:58 AM Subject: Re: [HESSIAN] Please end topic on DNA > > Generally speaking, the DNA may not be a viable topic for the Hessian list. > However, I am a descendant of Gottlieb Westfall. 3. I for one can not see how the Y-DNA test will "help" anyone's research other than to prove or disprove research done the old fashioned way. First you need to establish two continous all male links to a common male ancestor, then both men must take a Y-DNA test. If the Y chromozone tests a match, then this says you both did proper old fashion research. Of course, sometimes the data has to be "interpreted" (read "fiddled with") to get a match because of normal genetic mutations. If the test results don't match then there are several possibilities -- the test data is screwed up, someone's research is screwed up, or there was some adultery in one of the branches which broke the all male line.. Needless to say, I am less enthusastic than most about Y-DNA testing. Bob Brooks

    3. Hi Nelda and Hessian lists, I never would have given a thought to DNA possibilities until it was mentioned in the past few days. I spent 30 years as a librarian much of it on reference, along with managing local history and genealogy. Now retired, I made a new non-monetary job for myself.....doing something with all the genealogy stuff I had accumulated since I was 14! My mind still works like a reference librarian i.e. that is thinking of all kinds of possibilities and alternatives to locating information. If I would not be involved with brother Hessians it would not have sparked as much interest. If George Westfall is on this list, maybe he would like to think about this idea also. He still carries the surname while I do not. Gottlieb Westfall's daughter Mary Elizabeth Westfall married John Henry Light. Yes, my maiden name is spelled differently. That was my grandfather's doing. Most likely it would have been Leight, as he knew there was a slight change in the spelling. If there are any new people on the list, my family was in Berks, Cumberland, Perry, Dauphin. Schuylkill Coounties, PA. Pat Brandon may also want to think about it. As far as I know we are the only ones interested in Gottlieb Westfall/Westphal and his brother Heinrich, along with John, of course. There must be others who are descendants, but maybe they do not have an interest in their family history. At least we do have a little more on the subject in the archives. I do not want to load up the email on this topic, just felt that we should take another look and be more aware of new possibilities. I guess it is time to post to Westfall gen forum again and see what I can stir up. Thanks, Nelda, also to Eric, Peggy [Lyte] Tyrrell At 02:16 PM 3/3/05 -0800, Nelda Percival wrote: >Good Point Peggy... >So, Maybe some of the other members can weight-in with how DNA may help >their research? >Nelda > > > >Pax et bonum! >Nelda L.
