Dear Hessian Listers, Thanks to a few members of this List, I was able to obtain this English translation. And what a time line it draws for my ancestor, Johann Henry HAMMER, of the von KNYPHAUSEN Regiment, Von BORCK Company. To paraphrase John T. Humphrey at the Genealogical Society of PA 2005 Annual meeting: "Details concerning what an ancestor may have done on any given day can be difficult if not impossible to find. But details concerning shared or common experience have been recorded and that information is useful in gaining insight into" the ancestor's life. This diary follows my ancestor, though no enlisted men are mentioned by name, throughout the entire Revolutionary War. What a trip that was for me. It included the trip over, the initial campaign, the capture at Trenton, the prisoner exchange, the storm in the North Atlantic on the way to Canada, where all the von KNYPHAUSEN Regiment was captured except those on the "Archer" (including Lt. RITTER), the two winters, the 1st at St. John's Island (being unable to reach Quebec the 1st winter of 7 months) and the 2nd at Quebec, and the return to NY, as well as the return to Germany (after my ancestor's desertion). We are talking less than two hundred men here with this shared experience, over a period of years from 1776 through 1783. I feel certain that with all this time together (except the capture at Trenton and prisoner time), that Lt. RITTER and my ancestor, John Henry HAMMER must have at least been acquainted. At least they did have many common experiences. Thank you Listers who helped me locate this translation, and for even making me aware of it. Officially, it is known as a part of the microfiche of G. K. Hall's "Hessian Documents in the American Revolution." The RITTER diary is document "P" in this collection, and is microfiche #'s 279 & 280. According to Fred Vickerson, a copy is available in Canada from the University of New Brunswick, Harriet Irving Library. I ordered my copy from the Carlisle Barracks (MHI Fund, AHEC, 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013). Not cheap (101 pages at 50 cents/page), but maybe the Fiche can be borrowed at a library on ILL?
