    3. Hello Bob, I don't have my Hetrina Volumes anymore, gave them all up as you know, but our mal list archives do have quite a bit of interesting stuff, like this one from 2001. The Schwalm book and the list you quoted deal with the POWs from Trenton Christmas 1776, but here was Saratoga mentioned. I bet there is more to find in the archives. Cheers, John Merz (retired on Lake Ontario) Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 22:42:36 -0500 From: "John Merz" <hessian@cgocable.net> To: AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <021d01c0ab6f$a55b0860$c259e218@hala1.on.home.com> Subject: [HESSIANS] Re: hockenberry or harter (Hachenberger) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Oh Molli, oh Mollie, I am exhausted, wanted to prove to you that your Hockenberry really is one of my two Hachenberger's, Christian the younger, and Jakob the older, either brothers or at least cousins, born in the same village of Schwalheim, now 61231 Bad Nauheim/Hessen. You see, those two Hesse-Hanau soldiers were captured at Saratoga, and in 1782 indentured themselves in Pennsylvania for 3 years. They are missing since, and I have not had any calls for them either. So what I did was to check with Rootsweb www.rootsweb.com and when the homepage came up, I entered Hachenberger and it did not respond. Then I entered Hockenberry, and the flood gates opened. I don't know how many familiy researchers are chasing information, but there are over 850 entries in the 'WorldConnect' system alone, hundreds of other postings in all categories, but it seems to me that there is utter confusion, and only once did I see a remark 'Hackenberg' as a possible German name. Seems to me that there is a gap in the recordings of the family tree during the time of the American Revolution and appr. 1800, but they do have one Henry Hockenberry born in Germany in 1740, son of a Peter H. born in 1718 in the Palatine, there is one couple married in 1764 in Cumberland, PA, but their fisrt child is born abt.1777, the next in 1785 and a few more up to 1795. All very confusing, so I gave up. The name Hachenberger nowhere to be found. Where are those guys? Regards, John :( From: Fred and Mollie Brown Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 7:27 PM I am looking for an ancestor whom I was told was a Hessian mercenary in the American Revolution. After the war he settled in Pennsylvania. His surname was either Hockenberry or Harter. That's all the information I have. Perhaps you could help me. Thank you, Mollie Brown ______________________________ ------------------------------
