    3. The original German word would probably have been Tieffenbach which translates to deep stream. 3. Thanks for everyone's help! It seems as though 'Christopher Tiffaner' is either * under a name more dissimilar than the ones I've been searching for. * deserted or captured a long way from the Saratoga campaign and went to Vermont near the end of the war * a servant with the Hessian army, and not on the rolls or * possibly a different German immigrant. 3. Adam: You may be right, but don't give up yet. There were other Germans who ended up in southern Vermont at the end of the war that did not come down with Burgoyne. The archives will detail the search for George Hadstadt, as well as my ancestor Johann Kaspar Schoenewolf. Both were listed as deserting from Hesse-Kassel troops. We know that Hessians likely ended up in western Massachusetts from a captured troop ship. There was a prison camp built at Rutland, Massachusetts where Hessians were let out to work with local farmers and craftsmen. The diary of Dr. Wasmus, which is discussed at length in the archives mentions some of these, but not by name. Hessians were also moved to Massachusetts from Rhode Island. Unfortunately, the names of most of these are unknown, and there are extremely few records from the Rutland, Mass. camp. Schoenewolf was reported as deserting on June 15, 1781, but we think that is more likely the date when his desertion was reported by officers who marched south from Massachusetts to join up with the main Hessian armies for shipment back to Europe. He married in Leominster, Mass and settled in Rockingham, Vermont. So keep searching. You never know when the next piece of the puzzle will fall into place, or where it will come from.
