I believe the entire set was reprinted in the last decade and is still available for purchase at the arichives in Marburg, Germany, at roughly 30 Euros per volume. HETRINA is not the "holy grail" as it merely is a computer listing of abstracts from the original records, key punched onto the obsolete 80 column IBM keypunch cards (state-of-the-art technology in the 1960s when the program was started) then processed through a card sorter, then run again through a mainframe which printed out an IBM formated 125 column report. HETRINA is merely a photoreduced copy of that computer printout with a few pages of introduction, part in German, part in Englsih. The printout may not include all the information in the original record (and may include material NOT in the original record as the compliers manipulated some data in order to get the cards to sort as desired) but there is adequate (coded) citation to the original records, explained in the introduction. In order to keep the "event codes" rememberable, frequently two near-duplicate cards were prepared with only the event code changed. For example, an event where a soldier deserted [code 12] from POW status [code 11] would have duplicate cards/lines in HETRINA. Dear Group, I don't understand how to access the HETRINA. Can anyone help me? I'd like to include my ancestor's hometown, Treffurtt, formerly Hesse, now Thuringia, on my tripthis fall. Thank you for the help. Carol Preece
Bob, Thank you for your excerpts. Do you know if the HETRINA has a place of origin for "Alsace"? If so, how do I find it to search it? I have looked at some list of the Regiment Deux Ponts (from which I am pretty sure the name "Dupont" comes!) I have also heard of specific troops of Hessian recruits from Alsace. Keep in mind that the Regiment Deux Ponts [in German, Regiment Zwei Brücken] served with Rochambeau's army and was at Yorktown with the American army. As for HETRINA (covering the Hesse Cassel, Waldeck and Hesse-Hanau troops), there were 24 different letter codes (J & Q excepted) coving the men's places of origin including "F" for France. Two examples I have immediately at hand from the Ansbach-Bayreuth troops are:. D E S E R T E D , From the Corps of Yagers of his Most Serene Highnerss the Prince of Anspach, the following undermentioned Four Men the 25th Octo. 1782, Viz ... [#4] PAPTISTA COURBEAU, Five Feet 4½ inches high, Middle sized, black Hair, Black-small-Pox-Faced, born of French Parents, speaks bad German, had on when he went away a Green Coat and Waist Coat, black Velvet Breeches, and Accoutrements as the Former [a brass Hanger with a Yellow Leather Belt, a Rifle-Piece and a black or brown Leather Knapsack], Aged 23 Years. The Commanding Officer of the aforesaid Corps Captain de Wurmb, desires, that if any of the before mentioned deserters should come to any Person or Person's sight to apprehend and deliver him or them to the nearest Post in possession by his Majesty's Troops or to the Corps at present garrisoned at Hallifax: The Commanding Officer Captain de Wurmb Offers not only to pay all reasonable expences, but will Reward the Person or Persons, apprehending any one of them, handsomely. VON WURMB, Captain. [Halifax] Nova Scotia Gazette & Weekly Chronicle, issue of 29 October 1782, p. 3, col. 3. And a baptismal record from the Ansbach regimental church book: 1782-At two o'clock in the afternoon of 3 October, there was legally born [at Halifax] and thereafter baptized: Ernst Friederich-The father is Georg Chateau of Meisenheim in Saarbrücken, a Corporal in the Jäger Regiment-the mother is Anna Maria, nee Buettner, of Anspach. Sponsor: Captain Ernst Friederich Willhelm von Wurmb, of that regiment, who died of a wound during action at Penobscot. Although Meisenheim is in Germany, "Chateau" certainly is not a German surname. Sorry I can't help with your Hessian. How did youget access to the HETRINA volumes? I am looking for four or five French Alsatian brothers who came over as Hessians and stayed. The modern surname is Corya or Coryea; before it could have been Cruea, Cruey, Coryell. In German, closest would have been Kruer but I am sure our family name was originally French. Hi, I'm looking for help with Christoph Nicolaus. All I know about him is that he was in Regiment von Huyn and was listed as deserted in 1782 while in Charleston, possibly having something to do with the Stono conflict. I believe he later settled in the Charleston area and began a clan of Nichols, but also may have had at least one son somewhere in Virginia, Pennsylvania or Maryland along the way, who was adopted by another family. Christoph may be listed in Hetrina, Vol. 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Susan King (in NC) A possible Nichols descendant
Thanks Marie for this site. I wish I knew if mine were an Ansbacher so I could apply the info properly. It is difficult for we who have several names to decipher to know what it the route or which piece of mustering in info to use. People don't believe you have a hessian til you prove the mustering in and out. But this is a concise page I can save and use once I can disprove or approve mine. Connie
Hello List. In requesting info about my upcoming trip to Germany, I received an email response from an Ansbach official. Included was an attachment of an article written in German by Jochen Seidel about the Ansbach troops. I happened to see a web address on the pages, so I did a search on the Internet and found the article there. To my great surprise, there was also a link to translate it into English! Now Nelda has already put a link to Jochen Seidel’s old American web site on our AMREV Hessian website, but I never found this article there. Maybe I missed it, or maybe it is only available on this German website. So I’m sharing the links here for anyone interested in reading it and apologize if this is already posted somewhere else on our site or in our archives. If not, maybe Nelda will add the links under the heading “Ansbach-Bayreuth Troops by Jochen Seidel” on our AMREV Hessian website. Here is the name of the article in German: “Juchhe nach Amerika!” - Der Einsatz fränkischer Truppen im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg von Jochen Seidel. To find it, type this link directly into your web address area: http://www.jochen-seidel.de/ab-troops/usa1777.htm . Here is the name of the article in English: “Hurrah for America!” - The Use of Frankish Troops in the American Revolutionary War by Jochen Seidel. To find it, type this link into your keyword search area: http://www.jochen-seidel.de/ab-troops/usa1777.htm . When the results pop up, look for the choice “Der Einsatz Fränkischer Truppen im Amerikanischen” and you will see “Translate this page” underneath the title. Click on the Translate option and it will take you right there! Sorry if this has already been posted before. Marie Rasnick Fetzer http://rasnickfamily.org

First you need to join the AMREV-HESSIAN mailing list at rootsweb.com. then you need to address an email to that list. I am sending a copy of your email to this mailing list - Hopefully someone will hrelp you Nelda HIS EMAIL IS BELOW - Write him at his personal address: ~~~~~~~~ From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Hessian questions? Date: Mon, 16 May 2011 22:57:57 -0500 Hi, I am researching an ancestor who some think may have been a Hessian soldier in the American Revolution. His name was Gabriel Washburn (12 Oct 1752---8 Jan 1826). He was in York Co., SC in 1800 and later moved to Rutherford Co., NC where he lived until his death. He raised a large family, marrying 1st Eliza ______, and 2nd Priscilla Jones, who was born in MD, and later lived in Orange Co., NC. Since his parentage or ancestry has not been determined, some surmise he might have been a Hessian soldier during the Revolution, as he would have been about the right age, and because family tradition says he was from Germany. The surname "Washburn" is apparently of English origin, however I understand that many Hessians changed their names after the war. Would it be possible, from the information on my ancestor that I have given, to determine if this conjecture concerning possible Hessian origins is plausible? Are there surviving records concerning Hessian soldiers in the Revolution?......rosters, name changes, land grants, etc.? Many thanks for any assistance, or direction to the same, regarding this matter. Kindest regards, Ricky Toms Lattimore, NC
