    1. [AMREV-HESSIANS] Spanish Dollar
    2. Marie Rasnick Fetzer
    3. Hello Susan, Just a comment re: your earlier post about the Spanish Dollar. I don't know much about it, but it's my understanding that there were many different types of currencies circulating about during Colonial times. Of course there was the British denominations of pounds, shillings and pence. And the Thirteen Colonies also circulated their own versions, however their value varied from colony to colony, and their pounds were always worth less than the British version. There were also many other foreign currencies circulating about, most notably the Spanish Dollar. The Continental Congress issued paper money to pay for military expenses, but unfortunately both state and Continental currency depreciated rapidly. So it's my thought that maybe the price required to pay for a Hessian soldier's freedom was specified as eighty Spanish Dollars was because the Spanish Dollar was a more stable currency and had a very specific value assessed to it, as opposed to the differing values of the pounds of the various Colonies. I guess the Continental Congress had more faith in the value of the Spanish Dollar than their own money they were printing! Anyway, there's more information if you Google a search for Money in the American Colonies. Marie Rasnick Fetzer ----Original Message----- From: Susan King Sent: Sunday, September 18, 2011 2:28 PM To: [email protected] ; [email protected] Subject: Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Indentures in Frederick, MD Hi Kevin, If you haven't yet read the excellent work Marie Rasnick Fetzer compiled about our Ansbach-Bayreuth Regiment ancestors, you should. She did a fantastic job! (See the link below.) On page 19, she notes, from Conrad Dohla's diary: " 'According to Dohla, on August 27, 1782, Garrison orders were: 'Every prisoner of war who has the desire to remain in this country shall be set free at once and receive a Certificate from the Minister of War permitting him to enjoy the liberties As a native of the country. In this case he must pay the sum of eighty dollars.' Signed" John Wood, Colonel' " http://www.rasnickfamily.org/thehessianbarracks.pdf I have also heard others say it was required to be paid in "Spanish gold." I haven't studied it enough yet to know if that's factual. It's kind of a long story, and not easy to explain briefly, but when I learned of this, it threw out a red flag regarding my ancestor, Johann Christoph (Christopher) Waggoner. Some years later, Christopher was in Allegany Co., MD and was paying cash to the estate of an Edward Wilson. He is the only one to do so and there is no reason listed for the debt. It seemed odd. Edward Wilson and some others in the area, such as Lenox Martin, brother of the famous attorney, Luther Martin, can all be tracked back to Frederick Co., specifically the area around Frederick, the city, in the early 1780's. I feel this is one of the ties that help my case that Christopher in Allegany was indeed the Hessian Johann Christoph Waggoner. So, I was wondering if there were any records kept of the indentures of loans to the Hessians and I knew the awesome people on here may know. Hope this helps. Susan

    3. Well the gentleman who had this information on his blog mentioned there were 70 Hessians captured at the Battle of Trenton who were traded as forced labor and that they dug the trench starting in the beginning of 1777 under the supervision of the Elizabeth Iron Foundry in Brickerville. He said the location of the foundry site is now an active archeological dig by students of Millersville University, so surely they might uncover some Hessian artifacts if that is true. He also said the man who showed him "where the Hessians slept" was a Mr. William Coleman who lived in the Steigel-Coleman House, which is an official National Historic Landmark. I'm thinking that there must be documentation about the Foundry and the house, and the association they had with the Hessians somewhere there locally. I think I will try to email the blogger for more info. 3. Hello Hessians! I came across something pretty interesting tonight which I am sharing with the list. If it has been published or discussed earlier, I apologize. Here are a fcw links to a history teacher’s blog that are presented in a sort of mystery format. If the story is true, it reveals photos of an old buidling used to house Hessian prisoners, and the remains of the actual trench dug by seventy Hessian prisoners of war, captured by Washington's troops at the Battle of Trenton. The men were traded as forced labor and dug the trench under the supervision of the Elizabeth Iron Foundry in Brickerville. http://campmartintravels.blogspot.com/2011/04/hessian-prison-camp-part-1.html http://campmartintravels.blogspot.com/2011/04/hessian-prison-camp-part-2.html http://campmartintravels.blogspot.com/2011/05/hessian-prison-camp-part-3.html I would be very interested to know if anyone on the list knows of this place. 2. Hi Dave; In case you don't have this, Heinrich is mentioned in Virginia Easley DeMarce's book "The Settlemtn of Former German Auxiliary Troops in Canada after the American Revolution": SUSS, Heunrich, Brunswick Troopsborn Magdeburg, age 22 years and 5 months, discharged in Canada in 1783 (Rimpau). fourtth recruit transport (WB) Nothing else from her on this soldier. Incidentally, while those soldiers are often described as "mercenaries" many of them were part of the standing armies of the many German princes in what is known as Germany today. It was the regiments who were "rented" to the British by those German Princes. You might want to contact Ms Dominique Ritchot at [email protected] who has done considerable work on the Brunswickers who were discharged in Canada, also called Hessians. 3. Hi - I'm trying to trace my ancestor, Heinrich Suesse, who was a Private in Von Riedesel's regiment, arriving 4/22/1781 according to the Muster Rolls and Prisoner-of-war-lists in American Archival Collections Pertaining to the German Mercenary Tropps who served with the British Forces During the American Revolution, by Clifford Neal Smith. He appears to have been at Ft. Brooklyn on 7/20/1781. Apparently, he had not yet been assigned a company as of April 22, 1781. I was wondering if anyone has information on what happened to these troops? It is my understanding that Heinrich Suesse (Siess or Suess) left Canada in 1783 and ended up in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. His son, Henry Cease (Sies or Sees) was born in Pennsylvania in 1790. Can anyone offer help as to how to trace the Hessians who left Canada? Thank you.

Paperback, (1876),  reprint 2011, 211 pp. This work consists primarily of three parts: A  biography of Baron Von Steuben; a biography of General John Kaib; and  approximately 40 pages devoted to a discussion of the German Mercenaries.  The author's narrative also provides the reader not only biographical  information on Von Steuben and Kaib, but advances a focused insight into  the German contribution to both the American and British efforts. > >   > > Does anyone have any comments pro or con about the information  inside this book which could help me decide whether or not to purchase  it? > > > > Thanks, > > > > Marie  Rasnick Fetzer > > PLEASE CHECK ALL OF YOUR SUBJECTS! > >  ~~~~~~~~~ > > FOUNDER: John H.
