As I already know where Martin lived and >>> who his parents, spouse and children were, perhaps I ought not to spend >>> time looking for more about his military record? HETRINA II, line 8695, is a single entry for "Martin Ronshausen" b. ca. 1745-46, of Kirchhosbach, who is named in the 1783 Maß- und Rangierlisten vom Regiment von Ditfurth [Marburg, Best. 12, Nr.778 (HETRINA citation SR788) are the old numbers dated from the 1970s, however, they have cross-references]. The HETRINA date is coded "0.1783" indicating that this "regimental roster" is undated other than the year. The unit code "DIT4" indicates he was listed in in the company commanded in America by Major, then Lieutenant-Colonel, then Colonel, Ferdinand Heinrich von Schuler. The "01" event code you have cited as "appointed" merely means that he is on that list. The date of birth (1745-46) stated is merely a calculation based on his age as stated in the referenced record. I have never viewed this document and of those I have seen, each is slightly different. I would expect that his height would also be listed but what other information may be in that record, I can not say. CAUTION: I opine that this single record does not prove this man served in America because that is the only record of him found in Regiment von Ditfurth is this one and I do not know whether the roster was made up in America or in Germany. Regiment von Ditfurth sailed from New York on 13 Aug 1783 and they were home in Germany on 14 Oct 1783. On the other hand, it does not disprove that he served in America. As records go, the 1775 Maß- und Rangierlisten vom Regiment von Ditfurth is extant but that regiment was at that time only manned to an estimated 35% - 50% its wartime manning level. There are no extant reports of recruiting & manning after the treaty was signed in 1776 and although Marburg holds a complete set of Monatliche Listen [monthly reports] covering April 1776 to July 1783, he is not named therein. The monthly reports only reported on the exceptions: deaths, desertions, promotions, demotions, transfers in, transfers out, &c. This means that if a man was "recruited" in early 1776 and came across and landed on Staten Island on 15 August 1776 and stayed out of trouble until returning to Germany in 1783, then he should not appear in any of the interim monthly reports. I hope you found this more informative than confusing. Bob Brooks

    1. [AMREV-HESSIANS] Mail List Misuse
    2. Daniel Cooley
    3. My final thoughts on the matter, I'm sure y'all are happy about that. It is amazing how many people don't know the meaning of the English word /TOPIC/ (/the thing or area being discussed/). If a website is engaged in selling or bartering then it is a commercial website. I've been on numerous RootsWeb mail lists since 1996. I've seen a members booted for telling tasteless racist jokes [KYMason]. I've seen a whole group booted for trying to create a new breakaway group opposed to the topic of the existing group ([Sears] England vs Holland). I've seen a person viciously lash out and unsubscribe from a list because she was writing personal-life anecdotes having nothing to do with the topic [NYNiagara] and people were objecting. I've also seen people who possess a picture or objects they'd like to share. Here's how you approach this current situation: "I have some interesting Hessian pins that I would be willing to sell at cost. Please contact me off-list". That's how it is done folks. The amrev-hessians list-administrator should know this. Btw, what Nelda Percival said about mail list changes when Ancestry bought RootsWeb is not true. The basic mail list rules have always been the same down through the years to today. I don't know what she is talking about. Please don't address me with hit-the-delete-button, hate postings because my next action will be to unsubscribe. -- Dan Cooley [email protected] wrote: "Sieg Heil" In a message dated 2/25/2012 11:41:37 A.M. 3. The big response about ordering pins shows that the discussion about ordering them again is entirely appropriate so far as the list members are concerned. Let's end the debate, okay? I'd like to have five pins if they are reordered. My Hessian ancestor was Johann Martin Ronshausen who lived in Weissenborn and was "appointed" to the von Ditfuerth Regiment as a Private. His name and other information appear in the unit rolls. See: HETRINA Band 2 Item 8695. Question: What information can be gained by following up on the HETRINA entry - would it be payroll records and the like or might there be more personal information? As I already know where Martin lived and who his parents, spouse and children were, perhaps I ought not to spend time looking for more about his military record? Thanks. N. L. Ronshausen

    2. John Fazenbaker
    3. I too would be interested in purchasing about 10 pins. This is the first time I have posted but I follow the board and find it interesting and I think that this topic about Hessian pins is appropriate. My Hessian ancestor is Georg Johan Vessenbecker (Fesenbecker), 6th Co Jagerbatalion who settled in Western Maryland after being captured and released after the war. He purchased military lots 3858 and 3859 on Big Savage Mt in what is now Garrett County Maryland. His name was Americanized to Fazenbaker in early records and it is believed that everyone with the surname of Fazenbaker is a descendant of George Fazenbaker. If anyone has any additional info or needs any information about George Fazenbaker I would like to correspond. Thanks, John O. 3. Nelda, As a former list administrator, I find your lack of understanding of the purpose of RootsWeb mailing lists appalling. To refresh the list, here are excerpts of guidelines from RootsWeb (of which I have been a member since 1996). > WHAT IS A MAIL LIST? from http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/mail1.html#Q2 > A mailing list is a way of forwarding messages to others who are > interested in the same genealogical research as you. You send your > message to the list and it is sent to everyone who has subscribed to > that list. And everything that anyone else sends to the list will be > sent to you. It is a great way to find others who are researching in > the same area or are researching the same surname. What is the purpose of the Hessian mail list: > [email protected] is a mailing list for anyone with a > genealogical interest in the Hessian soldiers (German auxiliary troops > employed by King George III of England) who remained in America after > the American Revolution. What does RootsWeb say about the buying, selling, and trading of trinkets on their mail list system: > WHAT IS SPAM? HOW DO I STOP IT? Spam is the name given to any unwanted > e-mail. Generally, it is mass mailings offering get rich quick > schemes, advertisements, porn, virus warnings, hoaxes, etc. What does Nelda L. Percival say about the topic of interest on amrev-hessians: > The topic of American Hessian History and "OUR" Hessian pride. and you > can always find another list on a strict listing of only Hessian > Ancestors..Nelda L. Percival - my websites > http://freepages.folklore.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/index.htm > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/ It appears Nelda considers herself as an elite member of "OUR Hessian pride". Nelda, what is "YOUR" Hessian pride as opposed to, say, my interest in my 4th great grandfather, Christoph Bornhaus, born 14 Oct 1757, in Datterode, Hessen-Kassel? -- Dan Cooley

    2. I'd like to make a practical suggestion, that the minimum order should be no less than six pins.
