Hi Patrick, Based on research of my own Hessian ancestor, I can tell you that many Hessians found their way along the migratory route through the Shenandoah Valley. When the valley became "too crowded" for them, they continued on and wound up in SW Virginia and even into Kentucky. I don't know if Holzapfel is an unusual name in Germany, but if so, it seems to increase the liklihood that those men with that name might have been closely related. After watching the "Who Do You Think You Are" special last night about Rob Lowe's visit to the State Archive in Marburg to find his Hessian ancestor, it seems like you might try to find out if any towns of origin for these Holzapfel soldiers might be listed in HETRINA, and if so, try to determine if the towns are closely located and start your research from there. Now I can tell you that DNA is a wonderful thing! If you really wanted to pursue it, you could try to persuade male members of the German Holzapfel line and the American Holsapple line to undergo y-DNA testing to determine their connection, if any. Have fun and good luck! I knew that people who financed the revolution were eligible for the DAR, but I was a little surprised that simply the act of paying taxes during the time period qualified his ancestor. I expected that Oest(e) might have joined the 'rebel' army, but this was apparently not the case. I don't know how to search the archives here, but I do know that someone who has posted here has a connection to this particular Hessian. Hello, I'm watching "Who Do You Think You Are" on NBC right now and Rob Lowe has just found that his ancestor was a Hessian soldier at the battle of Trenton.. You should be able to watch it online or on demand. I'm still watching but I know his ancestor stayed in the US... Cindy Alldredge
Thanks for the alert. How many of us are hoping Rob's Hessian has our last name? Hello - I am hoping someone can help me in my search. What I DO know is that my hessian ancestors name was Daniel Howard. After capture he was working farms in Greenwich, Ct before marrying an American. Im having trouble in finding out where Daniel was captured. He originated from Hesse, Kasel, Germany. I am assuming that the last name HOWARD might have been changed from a more German last name. If anyone can provide help I would appreciate it. Thank you Chris Howard
No, it's definitely b5/12. Good thought though! kathy
If one read it as 25/12 76 it might refer to the debacle at Trenton that night. Barbara Broman
One correction to what I wrote: "Obviously reading the date as May 5 is tempting" should read "May 12." Sorry! kathy
I was wondering if some kind soul with access to the Hetrina or Mr. Burgoyne's list of Waldeck soldiers in the Rev War would be willing to look for a soldier with the initials "C.V.?" Here is my reason: I recently acquired in North Carolina a small, fancy, 18th century wooden tobacco box. The top has an unusual panel of beadwork spelling "Taback." It is a professionally made piece. On the the front in ink are the initials "C.V." Inside the lid, again written in ink, is the following: Von deinen Schwestern Zum Andenken Waldeck am b5/12 76 Translation: >From your Sisters In remembrance of Waldeck on/at the b5/12 76 It seems "Zum Andenken" is one of those phrases that has more than one meaning in English: a souvenir, in memory of, presented by, to remember, etc. What caught my eye was the Waldeck and 76 as I know the 3rd regiment was formed in 1776. The 76 is set somewhat off to the side but I believe it is for 1776 (the box is certainly 18th c.). The b5/12 has me puzzled. I'm not sure how to interpret the "b" in front of the numbers. I considered "battalion 5/12th company" but maybe not. Obviously reading the date as May 5 is tempting as that would put it in the perfect timeframe for the 3rd but I believe in Europe it would be read 5 December, making it after the 3rd had sailed. Which, of course, means it could be nothing more than a souvenir of a day trip to Waldeck or something like that. Still, the box got here somehow. It is in very rough condition and has obviously been in a barn or such for a long, long time. On your website I did find one "C.V." -- Christoph Voepel, POW at Amite, died in New Orleans 22 Oct 1779. Obviously, at this point I have absolutely no proof of connection to the 3rd regiment let alone to an individual but it is simply an avenue I'm exploring. I don't see this box as something a common soldier would have been given (it would have been impossibly bulky for a knapsack) but possibly an officer, maybe a junior officer. I am not a Hessian descendant or even researcher but I do have a minimal knowledge of the subject -- enough to have, thankfully, picked up on the Waldeck :-) Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Kathy in Virginia

I've also run into the same problems too. My German side of the family was from Darmstadt, Hesse; Lichenfels, Bavaria and Hosum, Schleswig-Holstein. If I did have 'Hessian' ancestors they too went back to Germany after the war. Cory: Just so you know before you invest a lot of money into the international records at ancestry. About 95% of the records are in German and most of them do not cover farther back than WW1.
