Hello everyone! I want to thank you for all of the information that you are so willingly supplying me. You are helping me in my research, and adding destinations for this fall's trip out East. I hope you won't mind if I keep asking questions as new information arises and causes another dead end. I forget how I initially stumbled on your website, but I do thank you for allowing me to be part of your email list. Sincerely, Suzanne
Does anyone have access to the book Die-Ansbach-Bayreuther Truppen 1777-1783andcould do a possible look up for anyone named Fuss or Fuchs that is listed from Lichtenfels? Thanks in advance, Matt ________________________________

Hi Nelda, I have been doing a lot of searching this evening. I did find a Phillip Gloninger as having taken an "Oath of Loyalty" in Lebanon, PA., but did not find anything yet that connects him with Georg. I will keep searching. I have actually been helped by all of the responses to my initial email. I am still as confused as ever, but I do hope to get to the bottom of it. Thank you for your help. I really do appreciate everyone's responses. Hi All: In “Johannes Schwalm the Hessian”, p. 231 begins “A Composite List of Hessian, Waldeck & British Prisoners Located in Lancaster 1777 & 1778”. In that list, File No. 53, Source Code g, is listed Georg Blumme, Artiliary Regiment, no Company listed. He is listed as having worked for Philip Gloninger in Lebanon, PA, but no Lancaster Exchange List numbers are given. This would indicate to me that he wasn’t available for exchange in 1777 & 1778. My Brunswicker ancestor has been used as a qualifying patriot to join the DAR, but he joined the Continental Army after the surrender at the Battle of Saratoga. The Daughters of the Revolution (DR), now defunct for some 70 years, and the Sons of the Revolution (SR), still in existence, require that qualified patriots had put their lives at risk for the sake of the Revolution. The Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution do not have this stipulation. Bill J. Both DAR & SAR accept Patriot status for Hessians, if they in some way qualify as a Patriot under the normal rules: military service, paying a supply tax, taking an oath of Allegiance to the new country, etc.. By the way, British soldier deserters do not qualify in the same way. A former National President of the SAR became a member based upon his Hessian ancestor's military service for America, after he deserted. Hello, I do appreciate all of the responses. I guess I did not completely understand that you only research the Hessians. I am sorry for not understanding this. Can you tell me if there was a Johann Jorge Blum or George Bloom that served with the Hessian Army that fought against the Colonists? Maybe it would tell if he deserted them or was captured. I appreciate your help. Thank you. Suzanne BTW: Bob Fetters, I have Fetters in my family. My Dad's sister married into that family. I smiled when I saw your name. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bob Fetters Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2012 4:42 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Johann Jorge Blum / George Bloom Both DAR & SAR accept Patriot status for Hessians, if they in some way qualify as a Patriot under the normal rules: military service, paying a supply tax, taking an oath of Allegiance to the new country, etc.. Hello, Both myself and my daughter are members of the DAR under George Bloom our ancestor. Recently we received a letter that there is a question as to the military service of George Bloom. The DAR has closed his account which means that my four granddaughters will not be able to become members of the DAR without proof of his service. I am descended from his daughter Lanie. Below I have listed the following: 1. Patriot service record that is currently listed with the DAR 2. Proof of his moving to PA after serving in the Revolutionary War and the list of his children and where they moved to. 3. Proof of his burial and acknowledgement of his service in the Revolutionary War. If anyone can assist me or direct me to the best place for information to verify this and remove the question, I would be very grateful. Sincerely, Suzanne This is the DAR listing. There are a couple of clips which weren't aired from the Rob Lowe-Hessian episode of WDYTYA at the following link: http://www.nbc.com/who-do-you-think-you-are/video/a-true-american-story/1398 634 Susan
That was fascinating. Thanks Nelda. The article comfirms something I suspected. That if you get certain male or female relatives to participate you can target certain lines of ancestry. Hi Suzanne, May I suggest that possibly your Hessian ancestor was not the one who changed his name, but that it underwent a metamorphosis, so to speak, over time. That is what happened in my soldier's case. His name at birth was Johann Jacob Rierschneck. His name listed in French on the Ansbach Muster lists was spelled as Jean Rührschneck, Ruhrschneck, Rierschneck, Riehrschneck and Ruhrschnech. His name as recorded in early Virginia records over the years has been spelled Reversnuck, Rosenake, Raresnake, Rearsnake, Raresnick, Raversnuck and Reversnuk. And 230 years later, the spellings our family uses today are Rasnick, Rasnake and Rasnic. Because the newly emerging country was a hodgepodge of varying languages, dialects and levels of literacy, many foreign names were spelled as each individual heard it, and in as many different ways as the people who transcribed it. The English heard it one way, the Scotch-Irish another, the French and Germans, still another. So while most of the Hessian soldiers might have been able to write their name, maybe that's one of the reasons why so many signed documents by their mark. Just a thought. In any event, it's a miracle that any of us can tract down our Hessians with problems like these! I personally don't think Shotzberger particularly sounds more English. He settled in a part of Pennsylvania that already had "Germans" living there and married the daughter of an immigrant from another part of Germany and wondered if that was why he changed it. I've talked to modern Germans who can't figure out either. I can tell you that in studying my Welsh ancestors, I've discovered that they spelled names phonetically on census records and spelled their own childrens' names differently every ten years going back to 1740 census and they could read and write. Do you any information about the number (if any) of the Hessians that stayed in American and married into the Native American Indian tribes? Could there have been any number Hessians that either resided in or moved into the Sand Lake, New York area? Also, was it a common practice for some Hessians that stayed in America to change their surname and if they changed their surname was there some common method to establish the new surname? Thanks for any help with these questions!! Hesse Kasel was a principaloty Please be aware Germany was NOT a country untill after 1900. COPIED FROM THE WEBSITE - http://freepages.military.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/why.htm In early 1776, King George III of England hired units from the various houses or states of Germany to assist with bringing the the colonist's rebellion to order. The hiring of foreign troops to supplement a country's army was a normal procedure during this time of history. Several of the German rulers, needing hard currency and being "between wars", were only too happy to oblige. They were Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (a principality in northern Hesse) King George III's brother in law, his son William, count of Hesse-Hanau and nephew to King George III; Charles I, Duke of Brunswick; Frederick, Prince of Waldeck; Charles Alexander, Margrave of Anspach-Bayreuth; and Frederick Augustus, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. About 18,000 Hessian troops arrived in North America in 1776, with more coming in later, of this about 3/4 of them were from Hesse-Kassel. Thus the colonist's newspapers referred to all of them as Hessians and the name stuck. In addition to firepower, American rebels used propaganda against Hessians. They enticed Hessians to desert to join the German-American population. In April 1778, one letter promised 50 acres (0.2 km²) of land to every deserter. Benjamin Franklin wrote an article that claimed that a Hessian commander wanted more of his soldiers dead so that he could be better compensated. After the war ended in 1783, 17,313 Hessians returned to their homelands. Of the 12,526 who did not, about 7,700 died - around 1,200 were killed in action and 6,354 died from illness or accidents. Approximately 5,000 Hessians settled in North America, both in the United States and Canada - some because their commanders refused to take them back to Germany because they were criminals or physically unfit. Most of them married and settled amongst the population of the newly formed United States. Many of them became farmers or craftsmen. The number of their direct descendants living in the U.S. and Canada today is still being debated.
