    3. The closest thing is the list that Clifford Neal Smith published, which comes from one prepared by the British near the end of the war. It's at the Library of Congress. I believe if you go to the LoC site and search on "German soldiers Revolutionary War," the item will pop up. I looked at microfilm there. It's very hard to read. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack Holdzkom" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 10:33 AM Subject: [AMREV-HESSIANS] Convention Army Barracks > Does anyone on this list know if there is a list of prisoners quartered at > the Convention Army Barracks? > > > Jack Holdzkom > Virginia Beach, VA > Possible descendant of Braunschweig Grenadier Christian Holzkamp > PLEASE CHECK ALL OF YOUR SUBJECTS! > ~~~~~~~~~ > FOUNDER: John H. 3. P.S. My only complaint: I wish they had used "auxiliary soldiers" (as Clifford Neal Smith did) instead of "mercenaries." It perpetuates the myth. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Derrow" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 9:49 AM Subject: Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] New Roadside Historical Marker-AlbemarleBarracks > Ed, > > Thanks for sharing this. 3. I can't figure out from looking at a map if Treffurt was in the duchy of Brunswick-Lunnenberg or not, but the majority of the troops in the POW barracks at Charlottesville were from there and not one of the Hesse duchies. Although I think there was one unit of Jaegers which were actually Hessians. See wikipedia for discussion on where the troops under General/Baron von Riedesel were from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germans_in_the_American_Revolution#Braunschweig-Wolfenb.C3.BCttel_.28.22Brunswick.22.29   They were captured at the battle of Saratoga, NY and marched from there to Charlottesville and from C'ville through Winchester to Reading, PA.  They were also known as the Convention Army.  The Baron and his wife both wrote memoirs about their experiences here in America which give a much better account of what happened than most historical records which seem to slant towards the British version of what happened.  Both the memoirs are available through inter-library loan.   There is a book which lists every member of the Brunswickers who stayed in America, where they were from, and what happened to them (not necessarily where they ended up more specifically than stayed in America).  The book is written by Claus Reuter, "Brunswick troops in North America, 1776-1783 : index of all soldiers who remained in North America" I found this book in the reference section at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA.  I know it is also available in C'ville, but am not sure if it is in Univ of VA or the C'ville historical society.  You can also buy online for $25+.  For my ancestor, the last name was spelled differently so we had to validate by age, first name, similarity of last name, what happened to him (sold himself to American, ie indentured himself). 1. Re: [AMREV-HESSIANS] In ?Johannes Schwalm the Hessian?
    2. Douglas MacDonald
    3. The book Johannes Schwalm the Hessian, page 239, lists Johanes Stumpf under File No. 615, Source Code c, Regiment Kny, with no entry under Exchange List. Source Code c indicates that his name appeared only on the list of prisoners from Lancaster received at Philadelphia. He was part of the von Knyphausen Regiment. There is no indication of who he worked for or the location of any work. With no entry on the Lancaster Exchange List I would assume he was not among those prisoners exchanged in 1777 and 1778, and therefore might have left the Hessian side before this time. Hope this is of some help. Doug MacDonald descendant of Nicolaus Henckell

    3. Hi Freeman: The name of Crede's regiment might be a clue for you to follow. I suspect that Rohl is misspelled as Rall. The von Rall regiment was captured at Trenton. The Johannes Schwalm published the list of prisoners in an early copy of their journal. They sell copies of the list independently so you might email or write to them for a copy.Curt > Date: Mon, 7 May 2012 22:08:09 -0400 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [AMREV-HESSIANS] John Gordin around Lancaster PA > > Hi!
